Biography

'Copied from information found online: "Pierre DUTOIS and his wife Barbara DE BONNETTE of the Parish of Tarrigny (?) with their two small children fled from France into Holland. They were disguised as Burgoise market man and wife, with the children safely disposed among the vegetables in the panniers on each side of a donkey which they led between them. A sword thrust into one of the panniers by a trooper came nearly to disclosing their identity, but the little hero who suffered a flesh wound in the leg, made no moan till the danger was past. Their daughter Elizabeth Dutois married Capt. Thomas Porter and were the parents of Elizabeth and Marie Porter."'

Warren Forsythe: "Pierre Dutois and his wife Barbara De Bonnette of the Parish of Tarrigny (?) with their two small children fled from France into Holland. They were disguised as Burgoise market man and wife, with the children safely disposed among the vegetables in the panniers on each side of a donkey which they led between them. A sword thrust into one of the panniers by a trooper came nearly to disclosing their identity. But the little hero who suffered a flesh wound in the leg, made no moan till the danger was past. Their daughter Elizabeth Dutois married Captain Thomas Porter. From "Porter Family Henrico Co., VA Records" compiled by Mrs. Margaret Scruggs Carruth.

The parents of Barbara deBonnette were in Bristol England until the winter of 1700, so it is possible that Pierre Dutoit married Barbara Bonnet in England; however, she is not listed as a French refugee (Huguenot) on the ship "Mary Ann" on which he arrived at the mouth of the James River on July 23, 1700. He came to Manakintown, VA in 1700 and was one of the founders of Manakintown.

The book "The French Lands", by Priscilla Harris Cabell, p. 117 states: "Registered as 'Pre.Dutoit', Peter, his wife and two daughters were living in Manakintown in 1714. As he and his wife were Historic Founders, he had, of course, been in King William Parish since 1700. Peter Dutoy(sic) had two patents. The earlier one for 400 acres in 1714 was on 'a Great Branch' of Manakin Town Creek. This branch was named for Peter and became known as 'Dutoy's Branch.' Today it is called 'Dutoy's Creek.' This patent did not cover French land. It was surveyed by Richard Ligon on 10 February 1706 for Peter Ditnay eight years before he patented it. His second patent, which was part of the first 5,000 acres donated to the French refugees, was less than half a mile down from the mouth of Upper Makin Creek. This patent (808) was 'the plantation whereon I now live.' He died in 1726. An abstract of his will (Henrico Co., Virginia, 02 May 1726, p. 659) is cited: Peter Dutoit of Moudon in Suisse, now of King William Parish in the county of Henrico to wife Barbara, the plantation whereon I now live for her life, containing 61 acres, between John Jouany and Stephen Chastain with 400 acres on the Great Branch of Monockin upper creek and 400 acres on the same branch joining the above. To daughters Elizabeth Dutoit, eldest daughter, the home plantation after my wife's death; to youngest daughter Mary Ann Dutoit, 300 acres situated as above; to son Isaac Dutoit, a plantation of 400 acres on Manockin Upper Creek; to nephew Anthony Bennin, 100 acres in the same tract (as my daughter Mayan's)after my wife's death; to sister-in-law Jeanne Sobrish a cow and a calf. Signed: Peter Dutoit, Executrix: wife Barbara. Wit: Jean Jouany, Jean Pierre Bilbou, Antoine Bennin, and Mlc (Michal) Young. Dated at Manockin town w.w. 2 May 1726; w.p. 3 October 1726.

Barbary DeBonnette Dutoy's (DuToit) Grandfather Louis Bonnet was born 1630 in Thrunjan (province of Porten-now Lenx Leon), France and died bet 1659-1721. Wife unknown. Father: Daniel DeBonnette/Bonnet was born abt. 1665 in Thurigat, Poitou Co., France and died 1720 in New Rochelle, Westchester Co. NY. He married Jeanne (Coutturrier/Couturier) Coliver abt. 1685 in France. She was born in Meachers, Saintonge France.

It appears the family was separated since Barbara went to New York, but then she must have traveled to Manakintown?????

On Page 30, "Register of Qualified Huguenot Ancestors of the National Huguenot Society", Fourth Edition, 1995, it states "Daniel Bonnett was a weaver by trade, fled to Bristol, England before 1693. Came to America in the winter of 1700/01 on a passport dated Bristol 16 Nov. 1700. Purchased land at New Rochelle in fall of 1702. Listed as a woolen worker from 1693-1699 in the Register of the French Church at Bristor, place of origin Torigne."

Her siblings: Peter DeBonette, Ann DeBonette, b. abt. 1685, France; m. Francois Benin who came to VA in Oct. 1700 with the French Huguenots who settled Manakintown, Elizabeth DeBonette b. abt. 1688, Jean Jacques DeBonette b.
