Errata
In The Haviland Genealogy, p. 20, Eduardo Haviland Hillman theorized that James had another son, Christopher de Havilland, who was Bailiff of Poole in 1553 and Mayor of Poole in 1569. The theory is based partially on Visitations where descendants were asked to present their family tree, which sometimes led to errors that became part of the official record (and thus recorded in Burke's Landed Gentry. [2] But there is no evidence at all that the Christopher in question was the son of this James de Havilland, nor the potentially fictitious James de Havilland in the 1895 version of the Chronicle de Havilland. There is evidence, however, that a John de Havilland, Mayor of Poole 1514, 1520, 1526 and 1534, who purchased the Manor of Wilkeswood in the Isle of Purbeck around 1530, was the father of said Christopher of Poole. See Christopher de Havilland for more.

James was a Jurat of Guernsey in 1517 - 1540. [1]

Note alternative birth date of 1511 and birth place of St Martins, Guernsey, England was given in a prior duplicate (unsourced) profile. Place of death was also given in that profile of St Martin's.
Anne - not necessarily. The "de Havilland" surname is not only its original format (though spelled variantly in records), it is also the current spelling today in many branches. (Example cousin: actress Olivia de Havilland.) The Haviland spelling is nearly extinct in England today - and never took much of a foothold there to begin with. On Guernsey it is de Havilland and never changed. Haviland is mostly American and Canadian now, descended from immigrant branches (likely descended from Christopher Havilland of Poole). I don't recommend "Haviland" here, as the spelling would get mixed up with the modern non-English branches. (In fact the author of the "Chronicle de Havilland" written in the late 1800's was born with the surname Haviland and changed it to de Havilland before he became one of the only American heralds to be accepted into the College of Arms. He took exception to what he called the American "corruption" of the surname de Havilland into Haviland. :-)

Haviland-296 and De Havilland-52 appear to represent the same person because: Same death dates. Haviland-296 was confused between the James who apparently died 1502 and was Mayor of Pool in 1494 and 1498 and married Helena de Beauvoir, with his nephew, the James who died 15 Oct 1540 and was a Jurat of Guernsey from 1517 and married Colliche Fouaschin in that place. I noticed a past attempt to merge with the other James was rejected due to the dates, so I'm doing this the other way around and have removed the incorrect wife and would like to merge him with the profile with the same death date. There is a contradiction on his birth date that will need to be resolved with citations. I will work on that.

The James who died 14 Oct 1540 married Colliche Fouaschin, not Helena de Beauvoir. I will cite sources.

De Haviland-1 and Haviland-296 do not represent the same person because: There are a number of James De Haviland's these two are not a match because of the dates and Helena is not the wife of Haviland-296 she was born about 1454
