Biography

Birth and Parents

John Derby, son of Christopher Derby, was born probably in the parish of Burton-Bradstock, Dorset, England, about 1610.[1]

He was born "probably Burton-Bradstock, Dorset . . . He was at Plymouth, New England 1637, removed to Yarmouth ca 1643. 7 or 8 children."

Arrival in Plymouth

John Derby was first found in Plymouth in 1637, where he was granted land on August 6, 1637. He likely came to Plymouth with his brother Richard, or about the same time.[1] (A previous biographical entry stated that he and his brother came on the ship "Speedwell", but there are no sources to support this assertion.)

Savage refers to John Derby, of Plymouth, MA in 1637, son of Christopher, from the west part of Dorsetshire, England. He removed to Yarmouth, MA before 1643, when John Derbe, Yarmouth, appears among those able to bear arms, and was dead in February, 1652. The inventory of his estate is dated 22 Feb 1655/6. He had a son, born the last day of Feb 1648, whose name is lost from the record, and a son, Matthew, born 8 Feb 1650.

Marriage to Alice

John Derby married Alice, surname unknown. After his death, she married Abraham Blush, who "afterward married, for his third wife, January 4th, 1658-59, Alice (widow of John) Derby, of Yarmouth, Mass." [2]

Death

He "died in New England (probably at Yarmouth) between 4 Oct 1655, when he made a complaint against Masshantampaine, an Indian, and 22 Feb 1655/6, when the inventory of his estate was taken."

The syntax in the paragraph under "marriage to Alice" is awkward. I suggest saying:

"John Derby married Alice, surname unknown, but she may have been the Alice Pearse who married John "Darbie" at Bridport, Dorset on February 12, 1631/2. (Month name hidden in binding, but the entry follows the record from the prior page of the marriage of Andrew Pridey and Emme Farwell on 14 Jan 1631/2.) After John Derby's death, she married Abraham Blush or Blish. According to the Bliss Genealogy, Abraham Blish "married, for his third wife, January 4th, 1658-59, Alice (widow of John) Derby, of Yarmouth, Mass."

Go for it, Barry; that kind of edit doesn't really need coordination ahead of time.

Derby-472 and Derby-272 appear to represent the same person because: Same daughter. Would the profile managers try to reconcile the differences between the two profiles?
