Nathaniel Doan, the son of Daniel Doane, was born probably at Eastham, Massachusetts and died at Harwich, Massachusetts before 05 July 1757 when his son-in-law was assigned administration on his estate.[1] He married Mary _____. Nathaniel "resided on his father's place in Eastham, for some years, but about 1744 removed to Harwich, and settled on the place formerly occupied by William Gray, He was constable and surveyor at Eastham, and a man of some prominence in both towns. He was one of the founders of the church in the South Parish in 1747, and its first deacon. His wife Mary survived him several years. She left a will which was never presented for probate. The Eastham records do not give a list of his children, but we have their names from the will of the son Elijah.[2]
On 05 July 1757, Edward Knowles of Eastham, yeoman, was assigned administration on the estate of Nathaniel Doane, late of Harwich, yeoman deceased.[1] This was probably his son-in-law Edward Knowles, husband of Nathaniel's daughter Anne.
The estate of "Deacon Nathaniel Doane late of Harwich yeoman deceased intestate and represented insolvant" was inventoried on 09 August 1757 and presented at court on 22 September 1757, sworn to by Edward Knowles. It included real estate valued at £128, farm stock and personal estate to total £177. In the final accounting on 02 August 1758, an allowance for the widow's dower was made, and necessaries for her housekeeping.[3]
Children of Nathaniel and Mary Doane:
Nathaniel Doane was a son of Dr. Daniel Doane by his first wife, said by her nephew, Harwich town historian, to have been Constance Snow, daughter of Constance and Nicholas Snow, who were the Doane's neighbors in Eastham, Massachusetts.[4]
However, as no official documentary proof of Constance's marriage to Daniel Doane exists, and the only existiing contemporary record is Josiah Paine's unofficial notebook, now in the Eastham Public Library, listing Constance Snow as Nathaniel Doane's mother must be marked: "UNPROVEN." [5]
