Thanks for your question. I am a member of the Ellis Family Project on FTDNA like you. You are the first G haplogroup Ellis ever to reach out to me. Kudos ! All my Y-DNA close matches on FTDNA have surnames other than Ellis, but they're mostly all Welsh surnames (Davis, Williams, Tudor, Lloyd, etc) and given the patronymic naming system used in Wales that is not surprising. Even early Welsh settlers in PA used it and kids ended up with their father's first name (or a variation of it) as their surname. So for people whose ancestors came from Wales, surname projects are not as helpful in finding relations as they are for other nationalities.
