Biography

A History of the Enos Family of Delaware 1463 to 1958, by Joseph G. Enos of Philadelphia, Pa.

According to this Enos family history (p.12 & p. 8), it is the general belief that Richard Enos of New Castle, Delaware was the son of John and Mary (Dibble) Enos who migrated from Windsor, Conn. to Gloucester Co., New Jersey around 1690-2.

The following from p. 12-14 of the Enos family history:

April 1, 1710: Richard Enos, laborer of Duck Creek, bought a slave from John Wood of Duck Creek.

30 Mar. 1716: daughter Elizabeth baptized at the Old Swedes Church.

Jan. 28, 1728: Richard Enos bought land near Nonsuch Run from Edward Blake.

19 Feb. 1740: Richard Enos and wife Susannah deeded land on a branch of Duck Creek to son Abraham.

The Enos family history reproduces the will of Richard Enos, dated Dec. 3, 1748, on pp. 13-4 (citing Book G, Vol. 1, p. 183 of the New Castle County courthouse records) as follows:

“I, Richard Enos, of the County of New Castle on Delaware and Hundred of same, farmer, being but old and frail but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God for it therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, that is to say principally and first of all I give it and my body I recoment to earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the direction of my Exec., whom nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and losing worldly estates wherewith it both pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. “And first of all I allow all my lawful debts to be paid all of them of the whole my dearly beloved wife Susannah I give and bequeath to her the third part of my Estates as the law describes. Next to my son Abraham, I bequeath and (?) heir one Shilling, next to my daughter Mary I leave five pounds of this currency, next to my son Stephen twelve pounds of the currency of this Government and next to my son Joseph I bequeath and order him to have ten pounds of this currency, and next I bequeath to my son Samuel the one-half of my land and half of my marsh I now possess, together with the whole of the brick house I now live in, the said house not to be divided all the same to Samuel, next to James my son I leave and bequeath the other half of my land and marsh and outhouses, the orchard to be equally divided with the rest of said land and marsh; and next I leave to Elizabeth Rebecca Hill one Spring cow and calf. And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former testament or wills, legacies or executions except of which I now name viz. Robert Mitchell my son-in-law and Samuel Enos my own son whom I constitute, make and ordain to be my Exec. Of this my last will and testament and in Witness whereby I have hereinto set my hand and seal this day and year above written, signed, sealed, published, pronounced and delivered by the sd. Richard Enos as his last Will and Testament.”
