Biography

Edward Fawkes was the son of William Fawkes, registrar of the Exchequer Court of York, and his wife Ellen Harrington.[1][2]

He was a lawyer in the ecclesiastical courts of York. He is variously described as a notary, proctor or advocate and succeeded his father as registrar of the Exchequer Court of York.[3][2]

He married Edith Jackson.[3] They had four children baptised at St Michael le Belfrey, a parish church next to York Minster in the centre of the City of York:[1]

  • Anne, baptised 3 October 1568 and buried 14 November 1568[4]
  • Guye, baptised 16 April 1570[5]
  • Anne, baptised 12 October 1572[6]
  • Elizabeth, baptised 27 May 1575[7]

The family lived in Stonegate, on the north west side of the street, in a house leased from the Dean and Chapter of York. It had been his parents' house. His father had died some years earlier, but his mother lived with them before her death in 1575.[3][2] There is evidence to suggest he conformed to the Protestant religion and regularly attended church with his wife and mother at St Michael le Belfrey.[8]

He and his mother became guardians of his first cousin, Jane Harrington, and "brought her up as if she had been their own child." In a Star Chamber case in 1571-73, it was alleged that one of the servants who lived at his house in York had abducted Jane.[3]

Edward died, aged about 46, and was buried on 15 January 1578-9 at York Minster. The parish register of St Michael le Belfrey records:

Mr Edwarde Faux, Regist'r and Advocate of the consistorye of the cathedrall church of yorke, aboute xlvj yeares ould, buryed in the said cathedrall church the xvjth day of January.[9]

He did not leave a will and his eight-year-old son, Guy, became heir to his estate. On 20 April 1579, his widow Edith was granted letters of administration for his estate in the Exchequer Court of York.[2]

Research notes

Birth
His birth year is inferred by his age at death in his burial record, recorded as about 46 on 16 January 1578/9. Inferred birth year is about 1532.

Edwarde was born about 1532. Edward is recorded as Edwarde Fawxe on the birth records of his first two children, Anne and Guye, in 1568 and 1570. His parish burial record spells his name as Faux.

Edward Fawkes was proctor, later advocate in the consistory court of York, possibly registrar of the exchequer court like his father, and, so far as can now be discerned, a staunch protestant. Guy's paternal grandparents were William Fawkes (d. 1558×63) and Ellen Haryngton (d. 1575), daughter of a prominent York merchant. Edward Fawkes died in January 1579, and was buried in York Minster. By February 1582 his widow had married Denis Bainbridge of Scotton, in the West Riding, and it is supposed that young Guy Fawkes became a Roman Catholic as a result of his connection with this strongly recusant family.
