Biography

Judith Ferrell was born abt 1785 to Ephraim Ferrel. Her mother has not yet been identified. She married Joshua Beasley on 16 Sep 1805 in Wake County, NC. [1] [2] [3] [4]

She is enumerated in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 US Federal Censuses as living and farming in Johnston County, North Carolina. In 1820, both Joshua and Judith's ages are given as between 26 and 44. Also living in the household are 3 males under 10, 2 males between 10 and 15, 3 females under 10, and 1 female between 10 and 15. In the 1830 census, Joshua and Judith's ages are given as between 40 and 49. There is an older female living with them whose age is given as between 80 and 84. In addition, there is 1 male under 10, 1 male between 5 and 9, 1 male between 10 and 14, 2 males between 15 and 19 , 2 males between 20 and 29, 1 female under 5, 2 females between 5 and 9, 1 female between 15 and 19 and 1 female between 20 and 29. They own 1 female slave between the age of 24-35. In the 1840 census, Joshua and Judith's ages are given as between 50 and 59. Also living in the household are 1 male between 10 and 14 and 1 male between 20 and 29, 1 female between 10 and 14, 2 females between 15 and 19 and 2 females between 20 and 29. They no longer own any slaves. [5] [6] [7]

By 1850, Joshua and Judith are still living and farming in Johnston County with real estate worth $400. Also living in the household are Cinda, 30, Zilpah, 14, Nicholas Edwards, 7, and Jesse Edwards, 6. Looking forward to the 1860 census, it would appear that Cinda, Zilpah, Nicholas and Jesse are servants. In 1860, Joshua and Judith are living in the Neuse River District of Johnston County with real estate worth $1,528 and a personal estate worth $550. They have 4 servants living with them: Winifred Webb, 22, Zilphia Washington, 21, Nicholas Edwards, 20 and Jesse Edwards, 18. [8] [9]

Joshua appears in the 1870 census with his second wife whom he married on 1 Jan 1869, indicating that Judith passed away prior to 1869. [10] [11]
