Biography

Sergeant Samuel Field was born about 1651 in Hartford County, Connecticut and his parents were Mary (Stanley) and Zachariah Field, Sr. On 24 June 1697, while he was hoeing corn in Hatfield meadows, he was ambushed by Natives and slain. He was buried at Hill Cemetery in Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. [1],[2]

In 1663 his parents moved the family to Northampton, Massachusetts.

He was a Sergeant in the Turners Falls fight on 19 May 1676. [3]

Samuel Field married on 09 Aug 1676 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts to Sarah Gilbert, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Chapin) Gilbert, of Springfield. She married (second) October 17, 1702, Ebenezer Chapin, of Springfield.

The 9 August 1676 marriage is record at Hatfield, MA. Massachusetts, Town Clerk...d Town Records, 1626-2001 [4]

He removed to Hatfield, Massachusetts, where he became a prominent and influential man holding many town offices.

Died 24 June 1697 Hatfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Cause: Killed by Indians. The settlement of his estate was dated September 20, 1701.
