Andrea Joseph Foldi (1878-1942)

Andrea Foldi

Andrea Joseph was born at home in Juliett Street, Enmore, NSW, on 24 March 1878. He was the black sheep of the family. Andrea (also known as Andrew) caused his family considerable distress when he told them of his intention to marry Hannah Jane Holllinshead.

Hannah was six years older than Andrea who had only just turned eighteen when they married. Hannah already had a nine year old daughter, Queenie, who was born in the Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Year, 1887. She was also six months pregnant when they married on April 15, 1896. Hannah Jane Hollinshead was born in Windsor, NSW on November 9, 1872 to John Hollinshead, a painter, and Mary Ann (nee Nayson). Her parents were believed to have emigrated from Liverpool, England, on a ship called the “Liverpool”. They Married at Windsor 1867.

Andrea did not have his family’s blessing and so stated his age as twenty-one on the marriage certificate.

Andrea never forgave his family for the way they treated Hannah and himself. He apparently had little or nothing to do with them every again.

In his younger days, Andrea gave his occupation as coachman and later in life as store man. He worked at Elliott Brothers Balmain for thirty-five to forty years before he was compelled to retire after suffering a number of strokes. He died at the Masonic Hospital, Ashfield, NSW on July 7, 1942 at the age of sixty four years. His remains are at rest in the Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery, NSW. In grave no. 1430 Section 14. Hannah passed away on September 13, 1948.
