Biography

Nathaniel Foote II immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Birth/Christening

Nathaniel Foote, second of seven known children of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming, was baptized March 5, 1619/20 in St. James Church, Colchester, Essex. [1][2] Many of the older genealogies state simply that he was born about 1620. [3][4] in England[5][4] This information predates the finding of his baptismal record.

In 1633 or 1634, young Nathaniel arrived in the port of Boston, Massachusetts with his parents and five siblings. His youngest sister, Rebecca, was born in Watertown, a settlement west of Cambridge in 1634. They were one of thousands of Puritan families who left their homes, family and friends in England in search of a place where they could worship without being "harried" by royal officials or the bishops of the Church of England.

By 1636, Nathaniel's parents and all seven children joined others from Watertown as the first contingent of settlers coming to the area now known as Wethersfield on the Connecticut River.

In the probate record of his father in 1645, Nathaniel is listed as 24 years old and was designated to inherit ten named parcels in Wethersfield. [6][7] When Elizabeth Welles, his mother, died in 1683, she mentions the children of son Nathaniel, deceased.[8]

Marriage

In 1646, Nathaniel married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Lieutenant Samuel Smith. [9] [3][5][4] She married 2nd William Gull of Wethersfield and Hatfield, Massachusetts and they had four daughters.[3][5][4] She outlived William, who died in 1701.[5][4]

Thanks, Bobbie -- that's a nice looking sticker above -- new to me! I would like to volunteer as profile manager or co-manager, since I've researched this Nathaniel Foote in Colchester (where he was born), Wethersfield CT, and in Hadley (where his widow lived with her second husband). I'm directly descended from him through the 3rd Nathaniel, Ephraim and all the Adonijahs. My new year's resolution is to fix profiles like this into friendly WikiTree format, and next to add well-sourced historical info on the split of the Wethersfield congregation that every family was caught up in right before this Nathaniel's death and that led many families to leave to re-settle in Hadley, Massachusetts.

Correction of location for 1646 marriage of Nathaniel and Elizabeth: it was Wethersfield Connecticut, not Hadley Mass.! Hadley was first settled in 1659 by "withdrawers" from the Wethersfield and Hatfield Congregational Churches -- 4 years after Nathaniel died. Elizabeth remarried and moved to Hadley with her new husband William Gull. Wikipedia article on Hadley has a basic summary; many more details in solid local history sources of both towns.

Attention competent Foote family genealogists working in 16th-17th C English Foote profiles: This profile (Foote-1580) should be merged with the correctly documented profile of Nathaniel Foote II (Foote-36 ), whose father was NOT a Robert at all, but Nathaniel Foote (Foote-50) b. about 1592 in Shalford and d. before 20 Nov 164 in Wethersfield, England. Also: No documentation exists for the purported Robert Foote father listed here (Foote-1581)! Please fix this!
