Biography

Joseph Sullivan Fruge was born to Augustin Fruge and Evia Chaumont on 13 February 1891 and was baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Chataignier, Louisiana as Joseph Guillory Fruge at some point.[1] It's not clear, without ordering a record of his actual baptism if Guillory was a mistake in transcription or why he later didn't use that name, but instead used Sullivan. According to his World War I draft registration, Sullivan was born in Basile in Evangeline Parish.[2] For some reason he gives his date of birth as 26 February 1891 in this draft registration. He uses the correct date when he registers in the draft for World War II.[3]

He married Nettie Fulton on 22 August 1916 at the Catholic Church in Eunice, Louisiana after obtaining a license in Evangeline Parish on the 14th of August.[4] The record gives their parents names as well as their ages; Sullivan was 26 years old and Nettie was 18.

Known Children With Nettie Fulton

  1. Winnie Marion Fruge bn. 20 August 1917; married Robert Lee; died 4 Feb. 1951.[5][6]
  2. Harriet Fruge bn. 20 August 1921; married Thomas A. Martin; died 18 March 2013.[7]
  3. Willie Mae Fruge bn. 22 March 1924 and died 9 May 1981.[8][9]
  4. Sullivan J. Fruge, Jr. bn. 2 May 1936.[10]

It appears that Sullivan and Nettie divorced at some point and he remarried to Lita Fontenot, as she is mentioned as his surviving wife in his obituary.[11] According to some sources, they were married 4 April 1962 at Evangeline Parish.[12]

Sullivan died 21 September 1971 at Moosa Hospital in Eunice.[11] He is buried in Miller Cemetery in Eunice.[13]
