Biography

Stephen was born in 1760, the son of Thomas Gardner and Sarah Wilcox, who moved from Rhode Island to Brooklyn, Nova Scotia circa 1758[1] [2]

On 26 Dec 1776, he married Rebecca Dexter, daughter of Ebenezer and Lydia (Rider) Dexter of Liverpool, Nova Scotia[3] [4] [5] [6], and they had children, including:

  1. Stephen, born September 14, 1777[6]
  2. John (Capt), born October 5, 1779[6]
  3. Elisha, born March 27, 1728[6] who married Rebecca Bearse
  4. Rebecca, born September 1, 1784[6], who married Enoch Freeman[7]
  5. Thomas, born July 30, 1787[6]
  6. Ebenezer, born November 10, 1789[6]
  7. Sarah, born June 23, 1792[6], who married James Godfrey, and whose daughter Abigail married Charles McLeod
  8. Ezekiel, born January 22, 1795[6]
  9. Joseph[6] 1798–1889
  10. Dorcas[6] 1799–1887
  11. Deborah Gardner 1801–
  12. Henry[6]1807–1873[8]

Stephen is mentioned in Simeon Perkins Diary as a ship owner and fisherman[9]. He also appears in the Census[10] [11]

Stephen died in 1884 in Brooklyn[12] [1]
