Stephen was born in 1760, the son of Thomas Gardner and Sarah Wilcox, who moved from Rhode Island to Brooklyn, Nova Scotia circa 1758[1][2]
On 26 Dec 1776, he married Rebecca Dexter, daughter of Ebenezer and Lydia (Rider) Dexter of Liverpool, Nova Scotia[3][4][5][6], and they had children, including:
