Biography

Judith (Garriott) Shirley was a Virginia colonist.

When Judith Garriott was born in Culpeper County, Colony of Virginia, in 1743^[1] her father Moses Garriott was about 26; her mother is unknown at this time. She married James Shirley in 1758,^[2] and they had 10 children in 18 years, apparently all born in and around Culpeper County, Virginia. She passed away in 1831.

Alternate death date 1804 in Oldham County, Kentucky

• Birth dates for Judith Garriott range from 1729 to 1743. If Moses Garriott (b.1717) is truly her father, the birth date of 1729 is highly unlikely since he would have only been 12 when she was born. Likewise, if Mary "Polly" Shirley (b. 1755) is truly her daughter, the birth date of 1743 is equally unlikely since she would have only been 12 when Polly was born.

• Judith's marriage to James Shirley supposedly in 1758 would have been after "Polly" and James Jr. were born. This leads to speculation that the date of marriage may be in error. Assuming that Polly's birth date is correct, the marriage date would be more likely to have been around 1753 and Judith's birth date would have been more like 1738.
