Biography

Richard was born about 1799.

1825 Marriage The parish record for Saint George, Bloomsbury, Middlesex in 1825 states that Richard Geary, of this parish and Elizabeth Geary, of this parish, were married in this church by Banns on the twenty second day of May in 1825. The witnesses were Thomas Ashley and Mary Geary.

1836 Death Richard was buried 8 June 1836 in Shoreditch, Middlesex, aged 37 [1] The parish record for St John the Baptist, Hoxton, lists his residence as Edward St, Wenlock Rd.

Bell's Weekly Messenger (a British weekly paper printed each Sunday) records the following [2]

"A shocking accident occurred on Thursday afternoon on the premises of Mr. Raphael, a dairyman, residing at No. 2 Argyll-Street near the King's-cross. Mr Raphael requiring to have a cesspool in one of the outbuildings cleared out, employed a man of the name of Richard Geary, a bricklayer, to do it. Geary, accompanied by one of his men, proceeded in the work, having first lowered a candle for the purpose of ascertaining the state of the air below, and, finding that it burnt, the man descended, and was some time engaged in clearing away the surface water; but at the moment of his touching the soil the effluvium escaped to such a degree as to cause him to call out for help. His master descended to his assistance, but immediately fell a victim to the noxious vapour. Their bodies were taken out with grappling-irons within about half an hour, and medical assistance was immediately procured, but all efforts to restore life were unavailing. They have both left large families."

Elizabeth applied for Letters of Administration of the estate and effects of William on the 4th October 1836. The estate was valued at under £200. Of some interest is the naming of Elizabeth Geary of No 5 Edward Street, Charlotte Jaques (widow) of the same address (she is Elizabeth's sister), and Mary Ashley of 1 Edmund Place, also a widow.

Speculatively, Mary Ashley may have been married to Thomas Ashley, a fellow who was buried in St John the Baptist, Hoxton on the 28th September 1851 aged 40.
