Birth and Parents

Nelson Walker Gibson is believed to have been born about 1 February 1822 at Kentucky. Nelson is believed to be the son of James B. Gibson (died circa 1845 at Putnam County, Indiana) and Sarah Brannock Phillips. James B. Gibson's will, written 1 June 1839, states that I have given son Samuel Gibson and John Gibson and James Gibson one hundreth and fifty dollars each of their paid in hand, and I give my daughter Eliza Mark (land worth fifty dollars and $150), my daughter Aly J. Gibson (land) .. and is to get one hundred dollars in property then Aly will be equal with the four older ones and I give William Gibson ... and I give Nelson Gibson ... and all the children younger than Nelson Gibson is to have as them that older than Nelson and the land is not be sold to the youngest comes of twenty one years of age except my wife deth .... I do appoint my son Samuel Gibson and y wife Sarah Gibson to administration. James's will was probated around 20 August 1845. He was stated to be a resident of Putnam County, Indiana at the time of his death.

Regarding Sarah Brannock Phillips from the transcription of a letter of Brannock Phillips (d. Iowa 1875) regarding the children of John Phillips and Sarah Brannock: Sally the third child who married James Gibson raised a large family, lived to see all settled in life and died in Putnam County, Ind. in April 1863 being 77 years old. I believe most of her children are in Iowa but some in Indiana. She has grandchildren in and about Centerville, Iowa and one son in Monroe County, Iowa. John the fourth child lived in Jefferson County, Indiana and raised a large family all of whom live there or in adjoining counties. He died in his 69th year leaving a third wife. I cannot name all of his progeny and shall omit all.

Marriage and Children

Nelson W. Gibson married Joessa Snellen on 27 November 1842 at Putnam County, Indiana.
