Biography

John Goodman was christened by his parents John and Elizabeth on October 26th 1814 in Kidderminster^[1]

In 1841, 25 year old unmarried John is living in Sneads Green, Elmley Lovett^[2]. His occupation is not listed, though he is probably an agricultural labourer.

John married Elizabeth Rogers in 1842 with the marriage registered in Droitwich^[3]

In 1851, 36 year old John is living in Sneads Green, Elmley Lovett with his wife and children^[4]. He is working as a labourer.

In 1861, 46 year old John is living in Sneads Green, Elmley Lovett with his wife and children^[5]. He is working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1871, 56 year old John is living in Sneads Green, Elmley Lovett with his wife and children^[6]. He is working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1881, 65 year old John has moved with his family to Stottesdon where he is now a farmer of 50 acres^[7]

In 1891, 76 year old John is living in Hill Farm, Stottesdon where he is the farmer^[8]. His wife, Elizabeth, son, William, and granddaughter Harriet are also in the household.

Research Notes

In 1851, there is a 3 year old niece staying with John at the time of the census. The first name is impossible to make out, but starts with an A. The surname is Rogers.

In 1871, John's 1 year old granddaughter Harriet is living with them. The parent is not shown, but the two possibilities are John's son John's daughter (with an unknown mother?) since he has just returned home or one of John's daughters, for example Charlotte who has been working as a servant (it was very common for servants to have illegitimate children). It's later been determined that Harriet is John's son George's daughter.
