Biography

John Graham was born 1 January 1834 in Jackson County, Alabama. He was the son of Jesse Graham and Martha Jane Fanning. He passed away after 1910 in Washington County, Arkansas.

Note: John is frequently conflated with his brother, Curtis Beason Graham. Curtis' wives are often added to John. John's name was not John Curtis Graham; it was simply John Graham. He is known to have had only two wives: Martha Jane Sartain (Sarten) and Pauline Abbot.

In 1840 John is with his parents in Jackson County. Alabama.[1] By 1850 they had moved to Rusk County, Texas,[2] where John married Martha Jane Sartain on 18 October 1851.[3]

In 1860 John is living with wife Martha J. and children James M., age 3, and Mary E., age 1, in Rusk County, Texas.[4] Living next door are Samuel and Sarah Fanning and Samuel's children, Mary and Samuel. Samuel and John are first cousins; Samuel's father, Benjamin F. Fanning, and John's mother, Martha Jane Fanning, are brother and sister.

In 1861 John enlisted as a Private in Co. Mtd. Rangers, Coryell County, 28th Brigade, TST, under Capt. William Clements. He stated he was 27 years old (b c 1834).[5] It is not known how long he served.

John has not been located on the 1870 census,

In 1880, John and Martha are living in Bosque County, Texas. With them are children William T.A., Malcolm R.L., Thomas J.J., and Rosa Belle.[6] John and Martha separated after this census and John married again about 1887 to Pauline Abbot. (Martha is living with daughter Rosa Belle in Young County, Texas, on the 1900 census. She has listed herself as a widow; had borne 9 children of whom 5 were living.)

In 1900 John and Pauline are living in Coryell County, Texas, with three children Major, Alfred and Agnes.[7] Major was born April 1884; Alfred was born June 1890, and Agnes in August 1892. The census states the couple had been married 13 years (c 1887) and Pauline had borne five children, three were living. If the marriage date of 1887 is correct, Major could have been Martha's son or Pauline's, born before her marriage to John.

By 1910 John, Pauline and daughter Agnes have moved to Cove Creek, Washington County, Arkansas.[8] The census says they have been married 23 years (c 1887) and Pauline has borne six children; only two are living.

The question remains: who was Major's mother? Was he the last child of John and Martha? Did John have another relationship/marriage between Martha and Pauline? Was Major the son of Pauline before she and John married? Given Martha's age (she would be 50 in 1884 when Major was born) and the fact that her last child before Major was Rosa Belle born in 1875, I don't think Major was her son. If he was Pauline's son, is he the reason John and Martha separated?
