Biography

Pearl was born in 1905. She was the daughter of Granville Gray and Martha Killion. Pearl married Edker Phillips on the 15th of December, 1923 in Lawrence, Arkansas.[1] In 1925,[2] Pearl was working as a cashier in Oakland, California.[3] Their family has grown to include:[4]

  • Enoch - born 1925 in Arkansas
  • Mildred - born 1926 in Arkansas
  • Frank - born 1927 in Arkansas

On the 9th of February, 1930, Pearl gave birth to a boy they named Charles, in Desha, Arkansas. He died on the 14th of June, 1937, in Evening Shade, Greene County, Arkansas. Charles was 7 years, 4 months and 5 days old. He died from a "congestive illness" with no care from a doctor.[5]

In 1940[6] the couple are living in Silver Lake Township, Desha County, Arkansas. (Their last place of residence was in Greene County, Arkansas.) The couple are renting a home located on a farm. Edkar (36) farmed 40 hours the previous week and worked a total of 52 weeks the previous year (with no recorded income although there is some income from other sources). The census recorded that Edkar had never attended school. Pearl (35) completed the 2nd grade. The couple have had 3 additional children:

  • Wanda (8) - born 1932 in Arkansas
  • Richard (4) - born 1936 in Arkansas
  • Robert (2) - born 1938 in Arkansas

In 1950[7] the family are living in Murray, Alameda County, California. Edkar is working 40 hours a week for the Veterans Administration Hospital as a gardener's helper. Frank, now 21, is also working at the VA Hospital. He worked 40 hours the week before the census as a laundry helper. Wanda (18) is not working. Pearl is keeping house and taking care of Richard (11) and the new additions to the family:

  • Leonard (9) - born in Arkansas
  • Margie Ann (7) - born in Arkansas
  • Oscar (4) - born in Arkansas

Mildred got married in 1941 to Kennie Pierce when she was 16 years old.[8] Kennie was 23. They were married in Desha, Arkansas. Enoch is living with his Grandmother Addie Gray in Jones, Greene County, Arkansas. He is 25 years old and working as a mechanic in garage.[9]

Edker died on the 14th of August, 1991 at the age of 87. [10] Pearl died on the 20th of October, 1992 at the age of 87. [11] The couple were buried together in the Fairview Cemetry, Linn County, Oregon.
