Biography

Susanna Gregg,[1] daughter of John Gregg and his wife Elizabeth Boothe, was born probably in 1819 in Ross County, Ohio, where her parents lived at the time.[2][3][4]

Susanna was married first on 16 Sep 1835 to Joshua Evans, by David R(P?)owell, Justice of the Peace,[4] and had two children:

  1. Lydia Evans, born about 1838
  2. Hezekiah "Kiah" Evans, born about 1840, married 29 Feb 1872 to Phoebe A Smith[5]

The couple divorced, possibly due to some misconduct on the part of Joshua, since his second marriage shows a child with his second wife born 1844, but he didn't marry her until 1846.[6]

Susanna married second to Job Lightle about 1844.[7][5] They had the following children:

  1. Wilson S. Lightle, born 18 Apr 1845, died 11 Mar 1920; married about 1868 to Rachel Amanda Vanderslice
  2. Mary Catherine Lightle, born Nov 1847, died 25 Nov 1902; married 18 Aug 1868 to Cole DeRenzo Rogers
  3. William Lightle, born 23 Oct 1949, died 19 Jul 1913; married first about 1877 to Amanda Unknown; married second in 1884 to Mary L Jackson

  8. Thomas W Lightle, (twin) born 6 Mar 1861, died 11 Apr 1913; married first 8 Dec 1886 to Arizona Louetta King (marriage license first had Henrietta, marked out), married second about 1906 to Sarah J Unknown

About 1852, the family moved to Missouri, where they lived in Polk County for several years. In 1860, they were living in Jackson Township, Dallas County, Missouri. The family was composed of Jobe Litle, age 43, male, farmer, real estate valuation $250, personal property valuation $280, born in Ohio; Susan, age 41, female, housework, born in Ohio, cannot read and write; Willson, age 15, male, born in Ohio, attended school during the past year; Mary C, age 13, female, born in Ohio, attended school during the past year; William, age 11, male, born in Ohio, attended school during the past year; John, age 8, male, born in Missouri, attended school during the past year; Sarah A, age 5, female, born in Missouri, Nancy I, age 5, female, born in Missouri, Louisa J, age 1, female, born in Missouri.[8]

She and Job Lightle spent the Civil War years in Iowa, having moved there not long before the war began. After the war, they moved from Iowa to Missouri. Sarah Abigail (Lightle) Gregg, one of the children who made the trip (she was born 1856), told the story of the return. On the trip from Iowa to Cass County, Missouri, when crossing the Missouri River on a ferry, the family dog was left behind. They called him (named either Rover or Spot) and he jumped in the river. They watched him swim and when they got ashore, watched until they saw him come out on the bank, following them, but swept downstream. When he got to shore he fell over like he was dead, but after a while when he was rested, he got up, and joined the family for the rest of the trip.[5]

Susanna and Job Lightle appeared on the census in 1870 in Sugar Creek Township, Cass County, Missouri, as Job Lightle, age 46, male, white, farmer, real estate evaluation $1,000, personal property evaluation $625, born in Ohio; and Susan Lightle, age 43, female, white, keeps house, born in Ohio, cannot write; William Lightle, age 20, male, white, at home, born in Ohio, attended school during the past year; John, age 19, male, white, at home, born in Missouri, attended school; Sarah, age 14, female, white, at home, born in Missouri, attended school (a twin); Nancy, age 14, female, white, at home, (a twin) born in Missouri, attended school; Jane, age 12, female, white, at home, (marked as twin, but should have been up or down a line) born in Missouri, attended school, cannot write; Thomas Lightle, age 9, male, white, at home, (twin) born in Missouri, attended school; Samuel Lightle, age 9, male, white, at home, (twin) born in Missouri, attended school; H Evens, age 29, male, white, no occupation, born in Ohio, cannot write.[9]

She died circa 1879 at Cass County, Missouri. She was buried at Wadesburg Cemetery north of Creighton, Cass County, Missouri. Her grave was marked by a fieldstone.[5]

Research Notes

George Alpha Gregg said that when his mother, Sarah Abigail (Lightle) Gregg, was pregnant with his sister Daisy, his grandmother Susanna (Sarah's mother) was sick. Sarah wanted to visit her mother, fearing she might not live. The weather was very cold, and Nathan (Sarah's husband) wouldn't take her because of the weather, baby Mary and the pregnancy. Susanna died soon afterwards, and was buried in Wadesburg Cemetery, her grave marked only by a fieldstone, which can no longer be identified, as someone cleared the fieldstones from the cemetery, probably to facilitate mowing.[5]

I removed the Find-A-Grave reference, which was incorrect. It referred to Stewart Lytle, who married Rachel Gregg. Neither Job Lytle nor Susanna Gregg are mentioned on that page.
