Research Notes by Milt

Thomas Gresham that lived on Horne Quarter Road 1747, in 1751 witnessed the Will of the Thomas Edwards listed above. Thomas Edwards signed his name with a distinctive “TE”. Thomas Edwards was probably his father-in-law. After John Gresham patented his land on Willis River (more specifically on Horn Quarter Creek) in 1744, he then disappeared, which is very suspicious, because the Willis Mountain Gresham's appeared in succeeding years in exactly the same place, the girls a little later in Amelia County: Edward Gresham sold land to Alexander Trent 1745; Thomas Harvey paid tithe for Robert Gresham 1746, Alexander Trent's District; Thomas Gresham, on Horn Quarter Creek 1747 (again, Alexander Trent's District) was assigned as one of several to maintain Horn Quarter Road (See below). Also, from the book Holcombe Nations, “The Holcombe's and Gresham's moved to Amelia County from adjoining counties”. After Edward and Robert Gresham moved to Amelia County from Cumberland (was Albemarle), in 1746 and 1747 respectively, Richard Henry Lee found Mary Gresham, “across the Appomattox River” and married her ca 1747 in Amelia (marriage usually takes place in residence of the wife), and Rhoda Gresham married Joel Watkins 1751 in Amelia County also.

Edward Gresham sold Robert Gresham (both of Amelia County) 80 acres of 380 acres patented in 1747 by Edward. In 1757 Robert Gresham (now living In Halifax County) sold this same 80 acres, with both Edward Gresham and Richard Henry Leigh (husband of Mary Gresham Lee) witnessing the sale.

Another telling anecdote, is that when Robert Gresham (apparent sister married Joel Watkins above) moved to Halifax Co. Virginia, he moved almost adjacent to Phillip Gresham and the Wynne's, the patriarch of which was William Wynne. Robert's son Harris Gresham was subsequently indentured to William Wynne. This Harris Gresham (and apparent siblings) later shows up in Orange County North Carolina after a Phillip (Philemon) Gresham appears there. Of the four siblings (Harris, Mary, Robert E. and George), Harris Gresham had a daughter named Rhoda, Mary had a daughter Rhoda and Robert E. Gresham signed consent for a Rhoda Gresham to be married. George Gresham was the exception (Note: Edward Gresham of Amelia also has a son named Harris that moved to Orange County, NC. There were two Harris Greshams in Orange County, NC at the same time. One of these Harris Greshams migrated to Sumner, TN with Moses Gresham)
