Biography

James Gresham was born about 1715 d. 1770

  • His deed of 1745 in Goochland County states that he and Elizabeth "are from King & Queen County."

There is no birth record for James at Christ Church Parish, Middlesex, VA and placing him as a brother to Thomas Gresham and John Gresham, the known sons of John and Ann Carnen Gresham as written in The Gresham Family by Thomas Gresham was just a theory. Both Thomas and John have baptismal citations at Christ Church naming their parents John and Ann Carnen, but James does not. Why would you baptize 2 sons and not a 3rd?

The theory in the Gresham genealogy was that there was a John Gresham who patented land in Goochland in 1744 near James Gresham's patent of 1745 on Licking Hole Creek, but that is not enough to prove James is his son, nor that John of the 1744 patent is John with wife Ann Carnen of Middlesex. This John may be a cousin or brother to James?. Research needed.

The John Gresham patent of 1744 was never completed and the land was eventually sold to the Carys. Since many Gresham sons of Thomas Gresham b. 1689 d. 1721 died young leaving orphans, this John may have also died before he completed the terms of the patent.

If you are interested in this line, please refer to my research notes that link him to the family of George and Sarah Dunweddie Gresham of King & Queen. George was on the Byrd Bridge Petition in King & Queen and his children are well documented in Miss Bagby's Bible.

James' widow Elizabeth, his daughter Sarah and her husband Benjamin Ainsley, his sons John, Thomas, James and Joseph all migrated to Georgia together. Joseph held the earliest land patent. He was the first to migrate to Georgia.

James' widow, Elizabeth Williams Gresham moved with the noted Southern Preacher, Edmund Byne and his family to Burke County, Georgia showing close ties to the family of George Gresham and Sarah Dunweddie of K&Q. Elizabeth Williams Gresham died in Burke County in 1781 and her obit was posted to the Atlanta Newspaper by her son in law, Benjamin Ainsley. I It took me years to find it.

Edmund Byne's dau had married Job Gresham, son of George and Sarah Dunweddie Gresham of K&Q. These two separate lines of children of James b. 1715 and George b. 1710 were possibly 1st cousins, eventually all moved to Georgia.

The sons of James and Elizabeth Williams Gresham

  • Thomas Gresham, son of James and Elizabeth Williams died at age 44 in Wilkes County in 1800
  • Col. John Gresham fought in the Rev. War went to Oglethorpe County
  • Capt. James Gresham fought in the Rev. War went to Wilkes County
  • Capt.George Gresham fought in the Rev War and died in New Jersey is buried in Pennsylvania.
  • Williams Gresham witnessed his sisters will in 1762

Note: The Joseph Gresham who patented land in Burke County abt 1762 is believed to be the son of George and Sarah Dunweddie and James's nephew. Joseph is not named as one of James's 5 sons in his will of 1770 but included at the ending as one would do for an adopted son. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gresham-140

George has a very colorful hand written application on his WIKI profile for his Rev. pension that details his travels after the War. He states that he visited relatives at Bowlers Ferry which is Dragon Swamp/ Byrd Bridge in K&Q County.

  • James b. 1715 did not fight in the Rev. war, but was a Colonial Soldier in the Militia for Goochland County, Virginia. (The Rev. War record available for a James Gresham belongs to different James and Elizabeth Gresham. Read the records carefully on this)

These two sets of probable 1st cousins witnessed each other's wills, bought from the estate sales of their deceased families and were appointed guardians for children orphaned. Thomas and his son James Dillard Gresham both died very young. Numerous records are in the Orphan Court Records of Wilkes County and Taliaferro County.

Note: Genforum posting #770 by Elaine Owens 4 Nov. 2000. She is a descendant of Sylvester Proffitt, friend and neighbor of James Gresham, Sr. (1718-1770) of Goochland Co. James is believed to be son of Edward Gresham of K & Q Co. where Edward resided at time of his death. This Edward may be son of Edward Gresham the immigrant who died in New Kent Co. Elaine’s posting states “James Gresham, Sr. is supposed to have John, Thomas, George and Mary (b. 1704) as siblings”. James Sr. and Elizabeth Williams his wife supposed to have had 10 children: James, Joseph, Jane (m. Edmund Duke), Anne, William, Sarah, Elizabeth (d. testate 1762), George, Thomas and John all b. 1746-59. James died testate in Goochland Co. 1770. James Gresham, Jr. married (1) Mary Christian.

James Gresham was given an allowance for burying her in 1760. An examination of original documents might determine if this was only Mary Gresham or if the other names Mercy & Massey represented one or more other persons. Who could Mary Gresham be?

Who is Massie Gresham END “St. James Northam Parish Vestry Book 1744-1850”. (Note: Mary, it is my belief that this is the mother of James. There was a Maria/Marie Gresham who attended Caroline Court about 1734 to testify for Richard Meaux against John Williams. She traveled, as I recall, 40 miles to and from where she lived which I think probably was in K& Q Co. I think she spent her last years with her son, James and some time with Robert Page as seen above.

23 June 1769- Goochland County DBk/WBk 10, p. 44-45. James Gresham makes his will. “… and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and for my Body I recommend it to the Earth to be Buried in a Christian Like and Decent Manner at the Direction of my Executors nothing Doubting but at the General Resurection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to bless one in this Life I give Devise and Dispose of the same in the following manner and form…. Wit: Wil. Mitchell, Edm’d Duke. Proven in Court 21 May 1770 by William Michell and Edm’d Duke. DBk/WBk 10, p. 70-71. Inventory of the Estate of James Gresham taken by John Hopkins, William Swift and Robert Cardin 16 June 1770, returned to Court 15 October 1770.

(Notes: Was Thomas, John and George the 3 youngest sons? My opinion is YES!! Was Joseph the oldest. My opinion is YES! Was he the namesake of an uncle or maternal grandfather? Most likely, and all the others were probably named in honor of some close relative or in-law. I wonder why the 7 year term before final settlement of the Estate was imposed. Could it be so that all his children were to have reached legal age when the Estate was divided? It could explain why George left when he did. Being the oldest, he could plow a lot of his own corn in 7 years. It might also indicate about when Elizabeth joined Joseph in Georgia???).

You have been so helpful. Thanks. The shared dna could actually come from the Lee family. Thanks for clearing that up. Ironically, I did grow up and go to church with a Lee Gresham outside of Memphis in the 1990's. I'll talk to him about providing some DNA to your project since mine does you absolutely no good. I guess my Daniel or Richardson ancestors didn't have any kids that my 3ggf Edward Forbus could have married or descend from. The search continues. Have a blessed life.

All Gresham male descendants are asked to do a Ydna test at Ancestry. We do not have enough people being tested. We desperately need Gresham MEN to take the Ydna test AT 111 MARKERS AND THEN UPGRADE TO THE BIG Y at FTDNA and join the Gresham Surname Project. Thank you, Mary

I have never found a birth record at Christ Church Parish for James. Until I see that record, James cannot be assumed to be the son of John and Ann Carnen as stated in The Gresham Family Book by Thomas Gresham. James did patent land in Goochland in 1745 near a John Gresham's patent of 1744. This does not make him John's son. The deed for land in Goochland in 1745 states that James and Elizabeth are "from King & Queen County" which is in the Christ Church Parish, but there is no record of James's birth recorded. Both Thomas and John, sons of John and Ann Carnen have recorded baptismal citations at Christ Church.
