Birth

Juan was born about 1605 to Juan Griego and Maria Pascuala Catalina Bernal.[1]
Text:
In 1661 he declared that he was born in Santa Fe, and was a captain fifty-six years old at the time.

Marriage

He was married to Juana de la Cruz[1] and they had five known children: Nicolás, Blas, María de la Cruz Alemán, Maria Graciana, and Juana.
Text:
Juan Griego II was already married to Juana de la Cruz in 1626; She was the daughter of Juan de la Cruz "El Catalan," and Beatriz de los Angeles.
His known children, all Griegos, were Nicolas; Blas; Maria de la Cruz Aleman, wife of Diego Lopez de Castillo; Graciana, married to Francisco Xavier, and Juana, nicknamed "La Cleriga."

Property

He owned an estancia in the Santa Cruz River Valley area, then known as La Cañada.[2] He probably acquired the land from his father. He also inherited his father's encomienda.[2]
Text:
Although dead before 1860, he was still remembered after the Reconquest in connection with his old homestead at La Canada.

Next came the property of Juan Griego II, Juan II was born about 1605 in Santa Fe, providing evidence of settlemant in that area before the official founding of the villa in 1610. His father Juan I, an encomendero, came to New Mexico with Governor Onate. It is likely that Juan I acquired the land in La Canada, which he left to his son, who was mentioned in 1628, 1631, and 1662 as owning an estancia there, his father having moved to the Bernalillo area of the Middle Rio Grand region by 1631. Juan II also inherited the family encomienda. He was related to his de la Cruz neighbors through his marriage to Juana, daughter of encomendero Juan de la Cruz.

Death

Juan was dead before the Pueblo Revolt in 1680.[1]
