The maiden name of Pierce Noland's wife, Katherine/Catherine (or Kathryn/Cathryn), is not known.
Her birth year is also uncertain (guess of 1655 based on estimated dates for husband/children).[1]
Katherine was the wife of Pierce Noland (sometimes Nowland). While some descendants show her as born in Maryland,[2] others believe she was born in Ireland[3] and immigrated with her husband to America (between 1675 and 1686). No reliable sources have been found yet.
Court records indicate that Pierce Noland's wife was named 'Katherine': These court records (from 14 March 1692 Charles County documents) show that "'Thomas Lewgar, late of Charles County, laborer, and Katherine Noeland, wife of Pierce Noeland, Taylor. . . [were] accused of stealing'. Lewgar was convicted and 'Katherine Noeland' was found not guilty." [10]
Katherine's death has been given as 1711[citation needed] and is generally believed to have been after 1707 (when the family moved to Stafford county) but before Pierce wrote his will.[citation needed]
Research Notes
Katherine's maiden name is not known. Following is information about suggested maiden names.
Hagaman - A merged profile (Hagaman-65) had "Darrell" as an "Other Last Name(s)" and a son Stephen (Noland-496) attached. Perhaps Stephen is a son of Pierce & Elizabeth Darrell? The merged profile had that Katherine (Hagaman) and Pierce were "married 1680 in Charles, Prince William County, Province of Maryland".[11]
Darrell - A Find a Grave memorial for her gives her last name as Darrell: Find A Grave: Memorial #42046108; Katherine Darrell Nowland (1660-1711). "Burial: Unknown" (Memorial created by David Roberds Sep 16, 2009). Note - not considered a reliable source since it does not cite sources or include a tombstone photo.
Sharon Noland's website has Pierce, son of Pierce & Katherine (mnu) Noland, married to Elizabeth Darrell, daughter of Sampson Darrell. My father's notes also show that, with an annotation by Sampson's name "1735 deed"[12]
Davenport - Another Ancestry tree gives Katherine's parents as Humphrey Davenport and Rachel Holmes (added 16 June 2018 by Chris Douglas). Another unsourced profile (Davenport-8518) had her as born in 1660 in Maryland and died in 1711 in Virginia.
Lat/Long Coordinates
Born: 1660, Charles County, Maryland[citation needed] (Map: Latitude: N38.4819. Longitude: W77.0117.)[13]
↑ "About 1660" works too - a merged profile had born "about 1660 in Charles, Province of Maryland", another had "about 1659 in Charles County, Province of Maryland".
↑ The WikiTree profile Nowland-22, created by Anonymous S through the import of Stout - Trask - Cowan .ged on 19 April 2011, showed Katherine born in Charles, Maryland, 1660. (See this changes page for Nowland-22.)
↑Liz Shifflett's family notes support Katherine (maiden name unknown) as wife of Pierce who died 1715 in Stafford County, Virginia, and show that Katherine and Pierce married in Ireland and came to Maryland by 1686.
↑ family records of Liz Shifflett (chart compiled by H.P. Noland, her father, in 1997)
↑ A son named Stephen was not included in the Noland family chart, but is cited by others as named in the 1715 will - I've only seen online statements that he named five sons in his will, with no transcript included & no mention of source (e.g., will book number)
↑ Old footnote was about a different profile for Stephen, before the merge with Hagaman-65 attached Noland-469 as son. That Stephen's son named Stephen (Noland-68) is shown now in WikiTree as married to a Smallwood, which brings us back to the rest of the old footnote: Stating Stephen as included in the 1715 will may be from Ronsheim's research, which made leaps to conclusions; as far as I know, the Smallwood Nolands are not related to the Pierce Noland line. A transcript of the will would help. (both original footnote & April 2019 update by Liz)

↑ Probably wife of Nicholas Carrol - see notes in the Colonial Settlers' database in the entries for
Text for Carroll-5189 notes that the Colonial Settlers' database is incorrect in stating that Nicholas's father was Keane [Aghagurty] Carroll (so Bridget's probably wasn't either).
↑ The relationship between Pierce & Katherine to the profile for Elizabeth Noland is marked as Uncertain, since it shows only a marriage to John Nelson, in 1704. See the comments on her profile (as of 22 December 2019) that talk about the Carrol family. A source cited on her profile, to the entry for John Nelson in an online database, says his wife was "Jane MNU Nelson". Some Nolands are mentioned in Notes but do not appear to support Pierce and Katherine's daughter Elizabeth being John Nelson's wife:

researching the DBE about Charles County, MD being outside the timeframe... WikiTree's problem was that it wanted pre-1776 version, which has "Province of Maryland" instead of just "Maryland" in the name. The Charles County that exists today was established in 1658, according to Wikipedia, which also says there was a previous Charles County:
Charles County was created in 1658 by an Order in Council. There was also an earlier Charles County from 1650 to 1653, sometimes referred to in historic documents as Old Charles County.
Maryland Formation Maps says of the discontinued one: "Formed in 1650 from part of Saint Mary's County. Abolished in 1654."
I've been working with a descendant of Stephen for a while, seeking documentation for him as a son of Pierce & Katherine (it's said he's named in Pierce's 1715 will, but that's disputed - see Noland-67).
Cheers, Liz
P.S. I'm supposed to be offline this month, but I had to check my e-mails & saw the proposed merge.
Hi! Not sure who Katherine Hagaman was, but no sources have been provided to support the name, and none of the Noland researchers I've ever worked with has heard a whisper that someone surnamed Hagaman was connected.
If you'd like to merge her profile away into this one with LNAB Unknown, please repropose the merge.
I also removed "Darrell" from Other Last Names. The FindAGrave memorial has no sources, no pictures, and "burial unknown"). Most Noland researchers have the Noland-Darrell union in the next generation: Pierce & Katherine's son Pierce m Elizabeth Darrell. A couple if researchers believe his sister Elizabeth, daughter of Pierce & Katherine married a Darrell, not a Carrol).
