Biography

Buried 1810 Cooper

Note: ISREAL HAIGHT - GENERATION VII. 2 Isreal Haight and Anna Sweet, his wife were Quakers, who over a. period of years from 1826 to 1836, along with their two known sons, were. disowned for failure to attend religious services, dressing out of. plainness, attending places of diversion, complying with military. requistion and ignoring the advise of their Friends. Their eldest. daughter died at the age of 16 and I've seen no more on the youngest,. since she was an infant when her parents were disowned, but her birth was. recorded by them and that is the only reference I have seen of her. In The History of Washington County compiled by the Washington. County Historical Society, I found two amusing stories on this family: 2 COOPER SHOPS. 2 "One of the first Cooper Shops was operated by Isreal Haight, who. resided at Beadle Hill. The shop was located "on the bend of the road. just east of the Friends' Meeting House" at South Easton. It was. represented by descendants of Isreal Haight as being on the east side of. the road just as the road originally bent north, but Frank Pratt reports. finding old brick, ashes, etc. in the south east corner of the cemetery,. so it might have been there. Isreal Haight was married in about 1810,. and the cemetery lot was purchased in 1787 by the Society of Friends. It. does not, therefore, seem very probable that a cooper shop would have. been allowed to be constructed on that lot. There are two stories connected with Isreal Haight which might be. related. On the front of the building was the sign--"I. Haight--Cooper.". One time a wag (probably what we would call a young wise-guy) came. along, and looking up at the sign said, "I hate the Cooper." The owner. standing by replied, "I hate thee, too!". His wife's name was Anna Sweet. A verse about her has been handed. down by some amateur poet, as follows: 2 "When the children of Isreal wanted bread,. Jehova sent them manna;. When Isreal Haight wanted a mate,. The Devil sent him Anna.". 2 From friends records it appears that they moved from Easton to. Saratoga sometime shortly after their marriage, as the Easton Monthly. Meeting Removal Certificates 1790-1959 gives the removal certificate for. Anna Haight, wife of Isreal, from Easton to Saratoga on 8251810 then,. almost as an afterthought, the removal certificate of Isreal dated. 7161812. It was recorded in the Men's Minutes of Easton Monthly. Meeting 15th of 6th Month, 1814 that Isreal and Anna moved back to Easton. from Saratoga. There were records of only four children, and the death. of Mariah, born 11 May, 1811, died 13 May, 1827, aged 16 years, no. months, 2 days was also recorded. In 1983, Elizabeth H. Moger, Keeper of the Records, Haviland Record. Room, NYC wrote: "The reason we come to a dead end as far as Friends' records go, and. why I cannot inform you as to the marriage of Stephen and Susannah, is. that the whole family were disowned, one after another. The disownment of Isreal is in the Men's Minutes of Easton Monthly. Meeting, 1813-1846, pp. 198-209. On the Tenth Month 13, 1825, we find,. 'Easton preparative meeting informs that Isreal Haight neglects the. attendance of meetings and refuses the advice of his friends. Adam Allen. and Gidion Gifford are appointed to treat with him on those accounts and. report thereon to next meeting.' The committee is continued in 12th mo. 1825, in lst mo. 1826 (with addition of Lewis Taber), and 2nd mo. and in. 3rd mo. On the 13th of 4th mo., 1826, 'The committee continued to treat. with Isreal Haight on account of his deviations, report they have had. another opportunity with him, but he did not appear to them to be in a. suitable disposition of mind to make friends satisfaction, after a time. of consideration it is thought best to proceed toward disownment.' On. the Fifth mo. 25, 1826, the committee had not had an opportunity with. Isreal on account of his being absent, and were continued, with the. addition of Jared Thomas. On 6th mo, 15, 1826, 'The committee continued. to inform I. Haight of the conclusion of the meeting and prepare a minute. of denial report attention and produced the following minute: Whereas. Isreal Haight have had a right of membership with us hath so far deviated. from the order of our society, as to neglect the attendance of our. religious meetings and refuses the advice of his friends, for all of. which he hath been laboured with, but not having the desired effect. Therefore, this meeting doth testify against his said misconduct and. disown him from being any longer a member until he shall make. satisfaction to this meeting. John Bragg and Benajah Barker are. appointed to inform him he stands disowned, offer him a copy of his. denial if required, and show him his right to appeal and report.' On 7th. mo. 13, 1826, the committee reported their appointment answered.". He must have been respected somewhat by his peers, as they took. almost an entire year to disown him. 2 Sources: from Haviland Record Room: Easton Monthly Meeting Marriage Certificates 1789-1964 p. 67 Saratoga Monthly Meeting Minutes, 1795-1813. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Israel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Israel:
