Biography

Esther was a Friend (Quaker)

Esther Haines was the eldest child of Chalkley Haines and Sarah Morgan. She was born in 1825[1] in Columbiana County, Ohio, near the town of Salem.

On November 2, 1848,[2] Esther married Jesse Allman, the son of William Allman and Lydia Heston Walker,[3] in Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1850, shortly after the birth of Esther's first child, she and her husband and two of his brothers, John and James, moved to Iowa City, Iowa, but by 1852 they had moved on to Marshall County, Iowa where they were among the earliest settlers. Jesse's brother, James, laid out the township of Le Grand and opened the first store in Marshall County. James was also the first Postmaster. The first school, a Quaker school, was taught by Elizabeth Allman, the wife of Jesse's brother, John.[4]

Esther and Jesse owned and farmed eighty acres of land in Le Grand Township. They had three children[5] who were:

  • Leanna J Allman (1849-1926), m. Thomas Adamson;
  • Sarah Matilda Allman (1853-1924), m. Stephen Elijah Davis; and
  • Chalkley W Allman (1862-1929), m. Rose L Jones.

On April 6, 1880, Esther died of cancer in Le Grand Township, Marshall County, Iowa.[6] She was only 55 years old. Esther is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Le Grand.
