Biography

1776 Project
Private Peter Hammons served with Rowan County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Peter Hammons is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A026069.

Peter Hammons was born November 25, 1759, in Prince William county, Virginia. Peter enlisted as a Private during the American Revolutionary War, in Shenandoah county, Virginia. Peter served in Captain Riggins' company, under the command of Colonel Netherton, of Virginia. He also resided in Rowan county, North Carolina, where he served in the companies of Captain Woolridge and Captain Langham, under the command of Colonel Pacely and Colonel Locke, of the North Carolina Line. [1]

Peter is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A026069. He is listed as "Peter Hammond," with the caveat: "the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling." DAR records indicate that Peter died before June 16, 1842, in Knox county, Kentucky and that his wife's name was Margaret. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their son, Jeremiah Hammons, who married Julia Broughton; Isaiah Hammons., who married Chiney Denny; and Peter Hammons; and of their daughter, Mary Hammons, who married Thomas Hale. Hammons-957 and Hammons-74 appear to represent the same person because: It looks like I accidentally created a dup profile. :-(
