"John Hankins Senior, came from New Jersey to Tazewell County, Virginia, about 1773 or 1774. He was one of the founders of the Baptist Church in Baptist Valley, this valley having been named in honor of that congregation."[1]

For the reader just dropping in, it's becoming apparent that many Hankinsons shortened their names. Although there's no clear pattern for it, the practice seems more prevalent among those who moved South.
