Thomas Harland, Yeoman, son of James Harland, was born "Nigh Durham, in Bishoprick, England"[1][2]
Thomas Harland with his 2 brothers George Harlan and Michael Harlan fled to Northern Ireland to escape persecution from the church and government for participating in the new religion of Quakers, Society of Friends; led by Reverend George Fox,; in which the denomination preached against violence including slavery and war; and had no clergy and practiced freedom of worship; therefore those who participated in Quakerism, were banned and persecuted forcing many to leave England[3]
Thomas Harland located in the Parish of Donnahlong, County Down. It is supposed that he remained there his entire life. He was a friend of the Society of Friends, and was buried in the burying grounds at Lurgn Meeting House, County Armagh. [1]
He married April 7, 1680, in Parish Sego, by ceremony of Friends at Lurgan Meeting, in Armagh County, Ireland. The marriage was held "at the house of Francis Robson"; Katherine Bullock (Friend), who died in the 3rd month of 1690, County Down, a daughter of George Bullock, of the parish of Donnahlong.[1]

Katherine Harland, wife of Thomas, died in 1690[1]
Thomas married second, January 8, 1702, Alice Foster, of "Lisnegarvy", at Richard Boyes house, Ballinderry Meeting, County Armagh. [1]
Thomas and Alice Harland had the following children: [5]

2. Thomas Jr b. 5-4-1705
3. Abigail b. 2-24-1708
It seems this brother did not venture to cast his lot in the new world. He remained in Ireland.[1]
Thomas Harland is buried in Lurgan Parish, Armagh Ireland.[1]
At a Province Meeting held at Mary Boyd's 30 9th month 1723 "[6]This meeting being acquainted yt Thomas Harland, an ancient friend belonging to Lurgan meeting, having lately suffered a considerable loss by an accidental fire, and because of his age, is not in a condition to use such endeavors as formerly to relive himself, & he being esteemed to deserve help & support now in his dotage: It's desired ye some friends in each meeting in ye ?, so on first days, when their meetings are most full, acquaint friends therein Desiring them to extend what they please toward ye said Thomas' relief."
