Thomas Harland, Yeoman, son of James Harland, was born "Nigh Durham, in Bishoprick, England"[1][2]

Thomas Harland with his 2 brothers George Harlan and Michael Harlan fled to Northern Ireland to escape persecution from the church and government for participating in the new religion of Quakers, Society of Friends; led by Reverend George Fox,; in which the denomination preached against violence including slavery and war; and had no clergy and practiced freedom of worship; therefore those who participated in Quakerism, were banned and persecuted forcing many to leave England[3]

Thomas Harland located in the Parish of Donnahlong, County Down. It is supposed that he remained there his entire life. He was a friend of the Society of Friends, and was buried in the burying grounds at Lurgn Meeting House, County Armagh. [1]

He married April 7, 1680, in Parish Sego, by ceremony of Friends at Lurgan Meeting, in Armagh County, Ireland. The marriage was held "at the house of Francis Robson"; Katherine Bullock (Friend), who died in the 3rd month of 1690, County Down, a daughter of George Bullock, of the parish of Donnahlong.[1]

Went with brothers, George and Michael, to Parish of Donnahlong, County Down, Ireland. Married by ceremony of Friends "at the house of Francis Robson" in Parish of Sego, County Armagh to Katherine Bullock (Friend). Married, 2nd, to Alice Foster of "Lisnegarvy, at Richard Boyes house, Ballinderry Meeting, County Armagh, 11 Mo. 8 1702/3. Descendents, 50 years later, went to Chester County, PA. (See Janet Palo notes).

Katherine Harland, wife of Thomas, died in 1690[1]

Thomas married second, January 8, 1702, Alice Foster, of "Lisnegarvy", at Richard Boyes house, Ballinderry Meeting, County Armagh. [1]

1. James b. 9-3-1703
