John was the son of Clement Harleston and his first wife Margaret Tey. He was born on 18 May 1511, probably in Essex, where his father had lands.[1][2]
John inherited from his father the manor of South Ockendon Hall, Essex.[3]
Marriages and Children
John married twice. His first wife was Mildred Munday, daughter off Sir John Munday, a London alderman, and his second wife Juliane Browne. A dispensation for the marriage was dated 27 June 1538.[1][2] They had the following children:
Jane, baptised at South Ockendon on 13 March "1541", probably meaning 1541/2[4]
Frances, baptised at South Ockendon on 3 May 1543[5]
Margaret, baptised at South Ockendon, Essex on 17 September 1544.[6]
Anne, baptised at South Ockendon, Essex on 10 April 1547.[7]
Thomas, baptised at South Ockendon on 11 January 1549/50[1][2][3]
Elizabeth, baptised at South Ockendon, Essex on 4 March 1551, probably meaning 1551/2.[8]
Mildred died before 22 February 1562/3, when John married Mary Felton, daughter of Thomas Felton and Cecily Seckford, and widow of Hugh Brinklow. The marriage took place at South Ockendon, Essex.[1][2]
Treason Charge
In 1552 John was made Lieutenant of Risebank Castle near Calais. In 1557/8 he was charged with treason for his part in the surrender of Calais to the French.[1][2] On 15 July 1558 orders were given for an inventory to be made of the goods of John Harleston, Lord Wentworth (who had been governor of Calais) and others, and of their revenues since Calais fell.[9] He was found guilty of treason on 22 December 1559,[10] but received a pardon in 1560.[1][2] A Bill of Restitution for his property was brought to the House of Commons on 13 March 1563.[11] Thereafter he lived privately.[1][2]
Death
John died on 28 February 1568/9 at South Ockendon, Essex, where he was buried[1][2] on 4 March 1569.[12] His second wife survived him, and went on to marry Robert Sampson of Kersey, Suffolk.[1][2]
Research Notes
Children
Richardson does not attempt to give a full list of children, naming just Thomas.[1][2]
Two additional children, with unsourced profiles created in 2014, are currently shown on WikiTree.
Baptism records have been found for all the other previously unsourced children whose profiles were created by the same WikiTree member in 2014, and it is quite possible that Julianna and William were children of John Harleston too. They have been left provisionally attached, but sourcing needs to be found.

This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestors John and Elizabeth Harleston to sureties Roger and Hugh le Bigod that needs re-development by the project. I will soon be adding the Magna Carta Project as co-manager of this profile, along with a project box and a Magna Carta section under the Acknowlegements heading. Thanks!
