Thomas Hatchett (1748-1811) was a farmer and early settler in Charlotte County, Virginia. He was born about 1748 in the colony of Virginia, the son of Edward Hatchett and Agnes Dodd. [1]

A Thomas Hatchett was a Captain in the Goochland Militia in the Revolutionary War.[2] He was a Wagon Master. [3]

Thomas married Phoebe Anne (Chaffin) Hatchett in about 1780 in Charlotte County.[4] Thomas and Phoebe's children included:

  • Phoebe Hatchett (1777-Abt.1841), married James Johnson (John) Foster
  • Harriett Hatchett (1778-1862), married Nathan Chaffin
  • Elizabeth Bass (Betsy) Hatchett (1780-1852), married George Watts Foster
  • Archibald (Archard) Hatchett (1782-1852), married 1) Susan Sublett, married 2) Sarah (Sallie) Luckey

  • Edward Hatchett (1791-1876), married Catherine Crutcher

All of these children except William migrated to Tennessee or Alabama as adults.

A Thomas Hatchett appears on a list of taxables in Charlotte County in 1782.[5]

The 1810 census of Charlotte County shows Thomas Hatchett, age 45+, living with a wife, three children, and 16 slaves.[6] Thomas passed away in 1811 in Charlotte County; his burial place is unknown. He left no will. His widow "Anne Hatchett" waived her rights of administration, and at the September 1811 session, the county court appointed his son-in-law John Foster the right to obtain letters of administration for Thomas' estate.[7] By law the court awarded one-third of the estate to Thomas' widow, and ordered that the rest of the estate be sold and the proceeds be divided equally among the nine bodily heirs: "...Phebe [Foster], Harriett, Betsy [Foster], Archer, John, Thomas, Nancy [Vaughan], William, and Edward."[8] An 1817 inventory of the estate shows each of the children listed above receiving equal distributions of the estate proceeds. The inventory also indicates that slaves and tobacco were part of the estate.[9]
