Biography

In 1773, Christopher Haynes was listed among the heirs of Francis "Bithill" Haynes in Halifax County, North Carolina.[1]

He served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting in Halifax County, North Carolina for service in the Continental Line as a Sergeant in the company commanded by Captain Dawson, in the regiment commanded by Colonel James Hogan. He served from April through November, 1777.[2]

On 9 February 1786, a census of District 11, Halifax County, North Carolina was taken by Matt. C. Whitaker. "Xpher Haynes" was included in this enumeration (along with Samuel Spears, a later associate in Hawkins County, Tennessee)[3]. Christopher's household included one white male 21-60 and one white female (any age), as well as three "Blacks," ages 12-50 and four "Blacks," under 12 and over 50.[4]

In her application for a widow's pension on her husband's Revolutionary War service, Frances Haynes (née Turner) of Hawkins County, Tennessee, stated that she married Christopher Haynes, as his second wife, in Halifax County in March of 1790 by Lewis Dickens, a justice of the peace for the county[5]

In the 1790 U.S. census, Christopher (listed as "Xpfer Haynes") was living in Edgecombe, Halifax County, North Carolina. His household included one free white male over 16, three free white males under 16, and one free white female.[6]

Christopher Haynes moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee around 1796 or 1797.[7]

Census records for Tennessee are missing for 1790-1810, and are missing for counties in East Tennessee for 1820.[8]

In the 1830 census, Christopher headed a household in Hawkins County, Tennessee, including the following members:[9]

  • 1 free white male 15-19
  • 1 free white male 20-29
  • 1 free white male 70-79
  • 1 free white female 15-19
  • 1 free white female 50-59
  • Slaves - 1 Male 36-54
  • Slaves - 1 Female Under 10
  • Slaves - 1 Female 10-23
  • Slaves - 1 Female 24-35
  • Slaves - 1 Female 55-99

Christopher wrote his will on 9 November 1830 in Hawkins, Tennessee [10] and died on 13 November 1831.[11]

Evidence that Christopher Haynes was the brother of Lucy Haynes Amis

Christopher Haynes wrote a will on 9 December 1830, in which he named his nephew Haynes Amis as one of his Executors in addition to his son-in-law James Bradley, suggesting that the mother of Haynes Amis was his sister. We know from Hawkins County Tennessee probate records, that Haynes was the son of Thomas Amis and Lucy Haynes. (Christopher left his estate to his wife Frances, heirs of son Thomas, heirs of son Turner, son Drury, Lazarus Spears, James Bradley, dau. Fereby Spears, dau. Sarah Charles, dau. Jane Hagan, dau. Mary Haynes, sons John, Christopher, Jesse, Francis). Witnesses were John W. Kershner, an illegible entry, and Thomas J. Amis [son of his nephew, Haynes Amis]. [12]

Haynes-1012 and Haynes-2078 appear to represent the same person because: Both are heirs of Francis Bythell Haynes. My Christopher Haynes was well documented in Hawkins County, Tennessee with an origin in Halifax County, NC (see especially his widow's Rev War pension). He also was the brother of Lucy Haynes Amis. I believe that the sister named Lucy in your profile is the same person as my Lucy, but with an incorrect married name. Please take a look at the sources I've included in my Haynes-2078. I would like to link my person to his father, Francis Bythell Haynes. Could you add me to the trusted list for that profile, too? Many thanks, Kathleen
