Biography

From Find A Grave:

'Garret Hendrix was born 1735 in Colonial Lancaster (York) County PA. Y-DNA confirms that Garret's father was Henry Hendrix (1698-1786). Henry came from York County, Pennsylvania to Rowan County, North Carolina prior to 1777. Both Garret and Henry were in York County, Pennsylvania off and on, or permanently, during the 1750's and 60's. A marriage record, dated 1758, from Christ Lutheran Church in York, PA names "Gerrold Hendricks (phonetic spelling), a single man, son of Henry Hendricks, with Mary, widow of Packwood" being married 24 October 1758. This Mary was Mary Pannel. She first married Samuel Packwood at Bethel, PA in 1749. Samuel died prior to 1758, thus Mary was "a widow of Packwood". This is the only document naming a wife and father. In 1762, there were two Garret Hendrick's listed on the Shrewsbury Tax List and in 1767 a Garret Hendricks is mentioned on two land descriptions in Shrewsbury.

Garret arrived in North Carolina via the "Great Wagon Road" from Philadelphia by 1770. He settled in the Surry County area, it being established in 1771. He is listed from 1771-1775 on Surry County tax lists.

Wilkes County was formed in 1778 and after this date Garret is found here until 1787. From 1788-1792 Garret is absent from any tax list as well as the 1790 Federal Census. He appears in Knox County, Territory South of the River Ohio (Tennessee), in 1792 and remains in Knox County, Tennessee until his death in 1808.

Many researchers name Garret's wife as Elizabeth Amanda Hall, the daughter of Samuel Hall and Millian Webb. They claim that she was both mother to her children: Letitia, Darby and Chloe Hendrix, as well as a sister to their spouses: Samuel Jr., Martin and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hall. This scenario is simply untrue. There is no documentation to support the idea and no marriage record of Garret Hendrix marrying any Hall has ever been discovered.

Garret's known children are Tarllonton, Letitia, Darby, Drusilla, Chloe, Luke, Squire, Rachel and Morgan Hendrix. Squire and Morgan Hendrix are often confused by researchers as the same person, but they are two separate and distinct people.

Garret's 295 acre farm has been located at the intersection of West Emory Rd. and Copper Ridge Rd. in the Karns area. The Old Beaver Ridge Cemetery is also located here. The cemetery was established in 1817. If Garret was buried there prior to the establishment of the cemetery it's unknown. He is most likely buried on his farm.
