Biography

This profile is part of the Herrick Name Study.

Mary Herrick was probably born in late 1691 or early 1692 in Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her parents were Ephraim & Judith (Woodbury) Herrick. No birth record has been found for Mary. Her parents were married on 2 January 1688/9.[1] They had a daughter Judith born to them on 29 June 1690[2], so Judith was their first-born child. Judith is the only birth on record for them in Beverly. Mary was married on 28 December 1708[3], which constrains her birth year to not later than 1692.[4] Mary is identified as the daughter of Ephraim Herrick in Ephraim's will of 1745, in which he mentions his daughter Mary just after his daughter Judith is mentioned, in presumed customary birth order.

Ephraim moved his family to Preston, New London, Connecticut Colony about 1694.[5] His daughter Anna was born there on 5 February 1696/7.[6]

Mary married John Starkweather in Preston on 28 December 1708 (the marriage was also recorded in Stonington, New London, Connecticut Colony records).[3]

Mary and John had children, the first three born in Preston, the rest in Stonington:[6][7][8]

  1. Mary (1710/11), married Jeremiah Kinne
  2. Lydia (1712/13), married (perhaps) Samuel Coggswell
  3. Anna (1715), married her cousin Joseph Starkweather, then Simeon Benjamin
  4. John (bp. 23 Feb 1718/9), died young
  5. Samuel (1719/20), married Sarah Purple
  6. John (1722), married Jerusha Smith, then Elizabeth (Belcher) Hatch
  7. Joel (1724), married Jane/Joan (Campbell) Trumble
  8. Elizabeth (1726), married Caleb Rude
  9. Robert (1728), married Sarah (Eveleth) Colby
  10. Woodbury (1731-1755), died unmarried
  11. Ephraim (1733), married Sarah (Lawrence) Carpenter
  12. Eunice (1735), married Abraham Kirby

The Starkweather family lived on the border of Preston and Stonington. Mary was admitted to the church in the South Society of Stonington on 4 July 1714, and John was admitted to the church in the North Society of Preston on 11 November 1720.[8]

John Starkweather died unexpectedly in 1750 while on business in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[8] There is a headstone with his name on it in the Eliot Burying Ground in Roxbury: Find A Grave: Memorial #29214463.

Mary died on 18 January 1786, most likely in Preston. She is buried in the Leonard cemetery in Griswold, New London, Connecticut. Per the church record she was aged 96 years (which has resulted in her often being assigned a birth year of 1690).[9] Mary has a Find A Grave: Memorial #69969931 which assigns her a specific birth date of 14 June 1690, which is not correct.

Judith was born 29 Jan 1690 and Mary was born 14 Jun 1691 - they were not twins. This family moved from Beverly, Essex, MA to Preston, New London, CT in 1694, where the other births may be recorded

Herrick-1015 and Herrick-38 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates. Same husband.
