Biography

Lucy was born about 1761, probably at Surry County, Virginia, since we can place her father there during that time period. She was the daughter of David Holloway and his unknown wife (probably Lucy Thompson, daughter of Nicholas Thompson). She married William Thames by about 1779 - this date of marriage is based on the documented birth of a son, David (1780)

She and her husband William lived in Bladen/Cumberland Co NC. Lucy died 23 Nov 1812 at age 51, and her husband William died less than two months later, 10 Jan 1813.

A joint obituary for William and his wife Lucy was published in the North Carolina Star (Raleigh NC) on 22 Jan 1813, page 3, column 4:[1]

Died on the 23d of November last, Mrs. Lucy Thames, in the 51st year of her age ; and on the 18th inst. her husband, Elder William Thames, Pastor of the Cape Fear Baptist Church, in the 53d year of his age. This happy couple were equally beloved in their lives, and lamented in their deaths. Having walked together in the statutes of the Lord, blameless, they were considered an ornament to their profession -- They were distinguished for early piety, and a circumspect walk through life--were the most affectionate husband and loving wife, tender parents, generous neighbours and zealous Christians, whose lights shined brighter and brighter until they finished their course with inspeakable joy Having left a numerous and lovely offspring to lament their departure ; they also left the invaluable patrimony of an unblemished character. Elder Thames was truly a worthy Pastor, was indefatigable in his ministerial labours, and ever enforced precepts by example. The night before he expired, he preached his last Sermon in a good state of health, and after a short illness of about 17 hours, he bid adieu to this sublinary world, in the heavenly frame of a good old Simeon. His death is lamented not by his church and relatives only, but by all his acquaintance who saw the utility of his labours, as a Preacher of the excellent Gospel.

Lucy's maiden name is finally found

Update 3 Oct 2022 - Lucy was the daughter of David Holloway. David was a witness to Lucy's father-in-law's will - Joseph Thames - and subsequently David had a couple land transactions with her husband, William Thames, and an earlier one where William witnessed a deed between David and John Beard. The 1795 transaction where David sold land to William states David was of "Burk...Georgey." I started looking at Burke Co GA records, but from previous research for another line of mine, I already knew that Jefferson Co GA was formed from Burke Co GA in 1796. So I checked both counties. I found his will, written 1818 and proved 1824, in which he names "my daughter Lucy Tims children" - and of course Lucy had died in 1812.

11 Oct 1780 - Bladen Co Will Book 2 p 275 - David Holloway is a witness to Joseph Thames's will.[2]

8 Feb 1783 - Bladen Co NC DB 25 p 121[3] - David Holloway of Edgecombe Co NC sells to John Beard of Bladen Co 256 acres (interestingly, it had once been owned by William's uncle Cornelius Thames), William Thimes and Robert Edwards witnesses. Proved at Bladen court Feb 1786 by William Thimes.

15 Jul 1795 - Robinson Mumford Sheriff to William Thames - Property recovered from David Holloway by Samuel Hollingsworth, 150 acres.[4]

7 Mar 1795 - David Holloway "of Burk County & State Gorgey" "send greeting" to William Themes, 400 acres on Asbus [Espies] Creek. Witness Samuel Theames and Elias Champion.[5]

24 May 1818 - proved 1 Sep 1823 - Jefferson Co GA [Jefferson was formed from Burke Co GA in 1796] - Will of David Holliway. The very first legacy he names is to "my Daughter Lucy Tims Children all the money that their father owes me likewise all the money that he has in his hands that he Collected for me from Robert Edwards..." Then he names his wife and four more daughters. He does not mention any sons. It's interesting that the foremost thing on his mind was the money his son-in-law owed him.[6]

During the 1780's and 1790's, David appears in the Cumberland Co NC minutes of the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions a few times. In the first instance, at court dated 26 Jul 1786, "On motion, ordered that a commission issue to Surry County, Virginia, in a case pending between Wm. Champion and David Holloway to take the examinations of Joseph Holloman, Josel Thompson, William Hart and John White."[7] Then...

...David appears twice for jury duty, first in 31 Jul 1790 minutes where he is charged to appear for the October term for jury duty, and second, at the October term, he is appointed to the grand jury. Then, at the January 1791 term, he is charged to appear at the April 1791 court for jury service.

I believe by 1795 he has left Cumberland Co, based on the sheriff's deed of 1795. But we can place him in Bladen and Cumberland counties prior to his moving to Georgia.
