Biography

Frank Hoskinson was born near Comstock Station, Wapello County, Iowa, May 5, 1861, and died at Oskaloosa, Kansas, April 27, 1923, aged 71 years, 11 months, 22 days.[1] [2] He was the son of Benjamin B. Hoskinson and Roseanna Holbert. He came to Kansas with his father and stepmother, Eliza Gibbs Brown Hoskinson, their family, and Eliza's father, Wash Gibbs, in 1857.[3][4]

Frank Hoskinson was a carpenter in Oskaloosa, Kansas. His mother, Roseanna Holbert Hoskinson, died when he was less than two years old. His father, Benjamin Hoskinson, remarried Eliza Gibbs Brown in 1852. Frank married Ellen Williamson Sept. 29, 1875, in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa.[5] Ellen Williamson's family moved to Kansas after the death of her father, Henry Williamson, in 1870.

Frank and Ellen had seven children: Herbert W., who died Sept. 15, 1895;[6][7] Mrs. Frances Carson ("Babe"), Jefferson City, Mo.; Mrs. Nora Burgess, Bancroft, Iowa; Mrs. Sadie Dewey, Ozawkie; Mrs. Kate King, John and Emmett Hoskinson, Oskaloosa.[8][9][10][11]

From the Oskaloosa Independent, May 4, 1923: The death of Frank Hoskinson removes from this community one of the earliest settlers. “Uncle Ben” Hoskinson was one of the early residents and kept a grocery at one time on the east side of the square, and Frank, one of his sons, has lived here as a boy and man since before the Civil war. Many of the buildings in town and country are the results of Frank’s handiwork as a carpenter. He had been in failing health for a good while but death came as a swift shock to the family and a surprise to all, it not being realized that he was fatally ill.
