Biography

Emmett was born in Oskaloosa, Jefferson County, Kansas, Nov. 1, 1887, the son of Frank Hoskinson and Ellen Williamson. He had four sisters, Frances "Babe" (1880-1964), Nora (1882-1960), Sadie (1892-1975), and Kate (1896-1981); and two brothers, Herbert (1876-1895) and John (1884-1959).^[1] The 1910 U.S. census listed his occupation as sadler, harness shop.^[2]

Emmett married Alta Ricks August 23, 1911, in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. They fostered Eddie Workman^[3] and adopted Lereta Hoskinson.

"He proposed to Alta on a train while she was on her way back to San Francisco, California, where she was a showgirl. He was a harness maker. He apprenticed with Peter Machiels in Oskaloosa, Jefferson County, Kansas, when he was 17. He moved to Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas, [in 1925] where he was a harness maker, making saddles, bridles and harnesses for Baker and Ossman."^[4]

In 1920, Emmett, Alta and Eddie were living in Oskaloosa, Jefferson County, Kansas, where Emmett was a harness maker.^[5][6] In 1930 and 1940, Emmett, Alta and Lereta were living in Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas, where Emmett was a harness maker in a hardware store.^[7][8] Emmett and Alta moved to Garden City in the early 1950s.

Emmett died in 1952 in Garden City, Finney County, Kansas. He is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Jefferson County, Kansas.^[9]
