Biography

Charles Albert Howard was born about 1829 in New York. We know nothing about him until he shows up in Nankin Township, which is now incorporated into Westland, Dearborn, and Inkster, Michigan. Many of the early settlers from the Nankin area were buried in William Ganong Cemetery, which has a Westland address. Charles A Howard is in the 1860 Federal censes for Michigan, Wayne, Nankin page 62. In that census Charles (New York) is with his new bride Jane Stevens (England). They were married April 1, 1860 and the census was taken on the 20th of June 1860. Of note on the same page Thomas Tyley, Margaret Tyley, and William Tyley aged 19 is listed. Jane Howards Mother was Sarah Stevens. Thomas Tyley was Jane’s Step Father. Sarah Stevens Married Thomas Tyley and they had a son William Tyley. William was Jane’s half brother. Charles and Jane Howard had a son Charles W. Howard in 1861 and another son Albert C. in 1863. Charles A. Howard enlisted for the Civil war in 1864 with the Michigan 4th calvarey and was in Nashville, Tennessee in the spring of 1865 when he died of disease. This left Jane with two infant sons. Per the Military survivor benefits document Thomas Tyley her stepfather shows up as Gardian of Jane Howard, Charles W. and Albert C. Jane Howard passed in 1867. The family legend was the boys were orphans and raised by a kindly neighbor Mr. Thomas Tyley, but in reality I discovered in this research process that Mr Tyley was Jane Stevens Stepfather and the boys Step Grandfather and Thomas Tyley was all they had in this world. The boys always thought well of Thomas. Charles W. the orphan boy was my Great Grand Father and Charles A. who died in the Civil War was my Great Great Grandfather. I would like to find and confirm the parents of Charles Albert Howard 1829-1865. I visited his grave in the National Cemetery in Nashville in 2012, and was probably the first in my family to ever find and visit the grave site.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Charles by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charles:
