John Hoyt Jr. was born about 1638 probably in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts. [1][2][3] He was the son of John Hoyt and his first wife, Frances. His mother died when he was bout 5 years old, and his father became one of the original landholders in Amesbury when John Jr was in his early teens. [2]
John Jr received his first lot of land on the river in Amesbury in Oct 1658 and was admitted as a "townsman" on 10 Dec 1660. He had a seat in the meeting house in 1667, had a license to sell wine in 1668, and was frequently mentioned as a juror in Old Norfolk records. He always signed his name in full, suggesting he was educated for the time. He also appears in Amesbury records as a lot-layer and constable. [1][2]
On August 7, 1697, Mary Hoyt, relict widow of John Hoyt and eldest son William Hoyt, denounced right of administration of John's estate and petitioned the court to have Joseph Hoyt, 3rd son of John Hoyt be appointed, which was granted. [6]
Robert Hoyt, m1 1701 Martha Stevens; m2 1707 Mary Currier; d 1741 [1][2]
Some unsourced family trees on the Internet have given John and Mary several more children, including the following: (unfortunately, no good sources have been found to support these additional children)
Death 13 Aug 1696 Killed by Indians, Andover Essex, Massachusetts
Note - From History of Essex County Massachusetts p 1504
1696: "Again we find the Indians committing depredations on the towns, and John Hoyt and one Peters were killed in Andover while on the road to Haverhill. It was at this time that the murderous descent (by Indians) was made on Haverhill, where nine persons were killed or carried into captivity, and among the number the plucky Hannah Dustin.
↑ The location of his birth could have been either Salisbury or Amesbury as his father appears in the records of both and was granted lots in both. His first wife died in Salisbury in 1643, which suggests that their home was Salisbury at the time of John Jr.'s birth.
