Biography

Mary J. Huff was born in 1843, in Indiana, the daughter of Elijah Huff and Mary Payne.

05 September 1850, Mary J.'s father, Elijah, aged 47 was a farmer in Centre Twp., Hendricks Co., Indiana. Also in the household: his apparent wife, Mary-48, born in VA. Children: William-17, born in OH; Elizabeth-16, b. OH; Susanna-11, b. Indiana; Mary J-7, b. Indiana; Rebecca E. 5, b. Indiana and Deborah Huff-3, b. Indiana. ^[1]

05 June 1860--Mary's father, indexed as "Elizah" Huff, aged 55, was a farmer. He and Mary-56, born in OH, lived in Center Twp. Children in the home: Susan Huff Female 18 Ind; Mary Huff Female 16 Ind; "Rebacca" Huff Female 14 Ind; Deborah Huff Female 12 Ind and Richard Huff Male 9 Ind. ^[2]

Mary Jane Huff and William Andis were married 25 Jul 1860 in Hendricks Co., Indiana, by C. W. Stewart. ^[3]

Based on birth dates of children, they moved to Kansas about 1868.

11 July 1870-- Mary Andis was 27. She and her husband, William, aged 30, lived in Dover, Shawnee Co., Kansas (P.O. Waveland) with children: Sarah-7 and apparent twins, William and John, 2 years old. All born in Indiana. William was a farmer. Next to them in the census record is Milburn Andis-50, wife Julia and their son, Isaac. Possibly Wm's family? 8 year-old May Andis is with a couple named Miller on the same page. ^[4]

01 March 1875 Kansas State Census--Andis family : William-34, a laborer; Mary Jane-34; Mary E.-13; Sarah A.-12; John L.-6; Wm. M..-6; "Harvy"-2 (b. KS) In the same record, image 4 in the record, on the right hand page, Mary Jane's sister, Rebecca Ellen McCall (1844 - 1921) and her family are listed. It appears from records that they moved there about the same time. ^[5]

Mary may have passed away 1875-1880, as her husband is listed in the next U.S. Census in the same location. Statu listed as widowed.. The twins and another son born about 1873 are living with him and her daughter Sarah is in the home of her paternal grandparents.

Mary was born about 1840. She was the daughter of Elijah Hough and Mary Payne. She passed away in 1876.
