Biography

Mary was born about 1802-1804.

She lived in Ohio by 1830.

Mary and Elijah Huff were married Sep 15, 1831 in Adams County, Ohio[1]

Ezra Huff is listed in the Hendricks County, Indiana 1840 Census. Listing 2 males under 5yrs, 1 male 30-39 yrs, 2 females 5-9yrs, 1 female 10-14 yrs, 1 female 20-29yrs

05 September 1850, Mary Huff was 48 years old, POB given was Virginia. Her husband Elijah, aged 47, was a farmer in Centre Twp., Hendricks Co., Indiana. Also in the household: William-17, born in OH; Elizabeth-16, b. OH; Susanna-11, b. Indiana; Mary J-7, b. Indiana; Rebecca E. 5, b. Indiana and Deborah Huff-3, b. Indiana. [2]

05 June 1860--Her husband was indexed as "Elizah" Huff, aged 55 and a farmer. He and Mary-56, born in OH, still lived in Center Twp. Children in the home: Susan Huff Female 18 Ind; Mary Huff Female 16 Ind; "Rebacca" Huff Female 14 Ind; Deborah Huff Female 12 Ind and Richard Huff Male 9 Ind. [3]

08 June 1870--The Elijah Huff family lived in Center Twp. Elijah Huff-62 and Mary-66 with Susan-25 (age incorrect, as she would have been about 27-28) and granddaughter Rebecca Hiller-18. (Elizabeth (Huff) Hiller's dau.) Also in the home is Flora Huff, aged 4, b. Indiana--this census does not specify Flora is Elijah and Mary's daughter and, given Mary's age, it seems a bit unlikely. Even so, Flora is still with her in the 1880 Census at the age of 14 and listed there as her daughter. (WikiTree also flags this "fact" with a caution about unusual information.) Two other options for Flora's parentage exist. One is record-based and the other is a part of the family tradition for a related family.[4]

08 June 1880--At 76 years of age, Mary Huff was widowed and lived in Middle Twp. with daughters, Susan -42 and Flora, aged 14. Listed next to them in the census record are her widowed daughter, Rebecca with five of Mary's grandchildren.[5]

Mary passed away after June 1880. likely 20 June 1889, at the age of 87 in Monroe Twp, Hendricks County, Indiana, if this death record belongs to her. Image not available. [6]

Research Notes

Huff researchers believe Mary's maiden name was Payne and there is evidence to believe that, although she has not been placed by name in a record with her parents. (not surprising, as her time with them pre-dated 1850)

Mary's place of birth may very well be Virginia (later WV?), although census records vary: Three census records give three different POB for Mary: VA, OH and PA. POB for her parents from 1880 census: Father-VA and Mother-OH.

Her husband, Elijah was found in the 1833 Brown Co. tax records, then an Elijah Huff was listed in the 1834 tax records in Liberty, Adams Co., Ohio. These were personal property records, but no land taxes have been found for him in Liberty that or any subsequent year. However, a potential brother for Mary Payne has been found who was listed in the same tax record as Elijah in 1834. [7] Mary &/or Elijah may have lived briefly in his household before moving to Indiana. He is Thomas Jefferson Payne. Thomas had tax records in Liberty 1832, 1833 and 1834.

Mary was born about 1803. She passed away in 1889.
