Rhodesian Pioneer Passes On

Desendant of 1820 settlers

&nbsp

We regret to record the passing of Vivient John L. Hughes, which sad event took place at the Privincial Hospital on Saturday June 7th, 1952. With his death another link with the past has been broken.

&nbsp

The late Mr. Vivien Hughes was closely connected with the early history of the Cape, and also with the pioneering history of Rhodesia. He was the grandson of John Lowne Frost, an 1820 settler who came out in what was known as the Damant's party in the ship "Ocean" and his grandmother was the daughter of John von Benecke who was sent out by Royal Commission under English government to establish schools in the Cape Colony.

&nbsp

SON OF A GRAND OLD LADY

&nbsp

The late Mr. Hughes was the second son of Mrs. Hester Hughes who was the grand old Uitenhage lady who attained the age of 102 years and who was a grand daughter of the Earl of Caledon, a former Governor of the Cape, after whom he was named.

&nbsp

Mr. Hughes father was John W. Hughes.

&nbsp

It was mainly due to the efforts of De. Jamieson who was a personal friend of his father that he left Uitenhage for Rhodesia and so became one of the early Rhodesian pioneers who fought through the whole of the Matabele wars in the Matopos.

&nbsp

BROUGT IN MATABELE CHIEFS

&nbsp

He was the scout who brought in the three Matabele Chiefs to the Chief Native Commissioner to discuss the initial stages of peace with Cecil Rhodes. He later returned to Uitenhage where he married and joined the S.A. Railways as a storeman. Shortly after being pensioned the war broke out and he returned to the stores where he continued working until quite recently.

&nbsp

Deep sympathy is extended to his widow and children.
