Biography

William Humphrey was born on 5 March 1729/30 to John and Hannah (Bird) Humphrey in Dorchester, Massachusetts.[1]

William's father died shortly after he was born, and his mother married, second, Josiah Kingsbury, and lived in Needham.

William served as a Lieutenant, and then Captain, under Col. Timothy Ruggles in the French and Indian War, and enlisted a class of soldiers "for his Majestys Service for the Total Reduction of Cainadae" in February and March 1760.[2]

Capt. William Humphrey of Needham married Olive Pratt on 28 June 1757 in Newtown (now Newton).[3]

William and Olive removed from Needham to Winchester, New Hampshire around 1768, as per the birth records of their children.

Children of William and Olive (Pratt) Humphrey:

  • Willard Humphrey, b. 26 December 1757[4]
  • Olive Humphrey, b. 28 January 1759[4]
  • Hannah Humphrey, b. 5 March 1760 (twin)[5]
  • Sarah Humphrey ("Sally"), b. 5 March 1760 (twin)[5][6]
  • William Humphrey, b. 18 October 1762[7]
  • Amherst Humphrey, b. 5 July 1763[7][8]
  • Lydia Humphrey, b. 23 January 1765[9]
  • Esther Humphrey, b. 10 May 1767 in Needham[7]
  • Massy Humphrey, b. 18 July 1768 in Winchester (name may have been Mercy)[10]
  • Joseph Humphrey, b. 20 March 1770[11]
  • Julia Humphrey ("Juliette"), b. 25 May 1772[12]
  • Susanna Humphrey, b. 26 October 1773, d.s.p. 8 May 1793[13][14]
  • Oliver Humphrey, b. 17 June 1775[15]
  • Euseba Humphrey, b. 12 February 1777[16]
  • Jonas Humphrey, b. 12 April 1778 James Humphrey, b. 19 April 1778[17][18]

A number of the children removed to western New York. As many as three of them may have married children of Thomas and Sarah (Vary or Verry) Lee, though this is not yet confirmed.

Olive (Pratt) Humphrey died on 12 June 1779.[19]

William married, second, Mary Frink, daughter of Rev. Thomas and Isabel (Wright) Frink,[20] on 22 August 1782 in Barre, Massachusetts.[21]

William died on 1 January 1786,[22] intestate. His son William administered the estate, which was found to be insolvent. William showed evidence that he had purchased half of his father's land before his decease, which remained undivided. The widow Mary still received her third, and the residuum was divided among his creditors.[23]
