Biography

Ellen, daughter of Robert Hunter and Margaret Mackie. No birth record was sourced for Ellen. She 'may have been born prior to Robert and Margaret's marriage.

She is also recorded as Hellen Hunter aged 15 in the 1841 Census.[1]

Ellen was supposed to emigrate with her family to New Zealand. Ellen Hunter's name and age of 18 is recorded on the passenger list of the 'New Zealand' as sick. The family left the Port of Clyde on 4 July 1842 [2] without Ellen who remained in England 1 (not Scotland) due to her fear of the Maoris.

This is recorded on Page 9 of Pioneer Passengers by J Neale. 1
