Margaret was baptised on 20 April 1806 at Edzell, Angus. She was the daughter of parents Catherine Don and James Mackie of Scotland. [1]
She is recorded as being 10 years Robert's senior in the 1841 Census so born about 1796, date reinforced by age at death.
On 29 May 1829, at Dundee, Angus, Margaret married by Contract signed on 5 April 1829 to Robert Hunter, a Labourer of Dundee. [2]

Five known children were born in their marriage but no birth/baptism records were sourced and are perhaps missing or unable to be transcribed.
At the time of the 1841 Census, Margaret is recorded as aged 40 and employed as a Mill Spinner. They live at Blinhsall Street, Dundee. Husband Robert is working as a Carter and they have 4 children, Ellen, Gardner, Peter and Sarah still living at home. Robert Jr isn't recorded and may be lodging elsewhere. 1
She was to say goodbye to her daughter Ellen before boarding the barque 'New Zealand'. Afraid of the Maoris, Ellen had decided to remain in Scotland. Margaret and her family left Scotland from the Port at Clyde on July 4 and landed in Nelson November 4. [3]
They settled at Waimea East where Robert worked as a Sawyer and later Farmer.
Margaret was widowed in 1853. She settled Robert's estate in 1859 and signed her Affidavit Margaret Gordon Hunter.
Margaret died suddenly on 12 September 1861aged 65/66 at Waimea West, Nelson, New Zealand[4] age 66. An inquest was held and verdict given - 'she died by the hand of god'[5] Margaret (Mackie) Hunter is buried at Hallowell Cemetery, Nelson. [6]
Her son Gardener Hunter acted as one of the executors of her estate.[7] Her will bequeathed her wearing apparel (clothes) to her daughter, Sarah the wife of Charles Kite.[8] and the remainder of her estate equally to her living children.[9]
