William Hutchinson, son of Henry Hutchinson of London, England, was born c. 1604.[1] In 1618, he boarded the ship Diana[2] and sailed to Jamestown.

He settled in Elizabeth City, where he served as one of Capt. William Tucker's men. He is listed as a surviver of the Indian attacks that began in 1622.[3][4]

In 1624/25, when a census was taken, he is recorded as still living in Capt. Tucker's muster in Elizabeth City.[1][5][6] He was one of more than a dozen men who worked for Capt. Tucker and may have followed him into battle with the Indians, who continued to harrass the colonists.

Meanwhile, William's father, Henry Hutchinson of London, was successful in securing 2 shares of Virginia Company stock from Capt. Ralph Hamor on 13 Mar 1622.[7] This stock was probably tendered in the form of land in Warresqueak (later to become Isle of Wight County), where Capt. Hamor had been developing land.[8]

When William had fulfilled his obligations to Capt. Tucker, he moved to Warresqueak and established himself there. In Feb 1632, he became a commissioner and later a burgess, representing Warresqueak.[9][10][11]

William died before 26 Jun 1637, when his father, Henry Hutchinson, filed a law suit and came to Virginia to settle his son's estate. Henry died suddenly less than a year after William's death, and the governor of Virginia appointed Thomas Burbage to inventory the estate and sell it. William Hutchinson was thought to be a wealthy man, and indeed the estate was settled at 30,000 or 40,000 lbs. of tobacco.[12]

From ancestry, U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s it states that William Hutchinson was born about 1597. This William Hutchinson born 1604. Would he not be to young to serve with Captain William Tucker. Is it possible this William could be William Hutchins son of Thomas Hutchins who was born about 1597 in Towcester, Northamptonshire, England.

Anne, thank you for this information. I am always eager to find connections for the original Jamestown profiles I created awhile back. In this case, William Hutchinson was about the same age as the other men on Captain Tucker's muster, so he seems to be a good fit there. It also seems likely that his name is spelled correctly as "Hutchinson" since he also appears on the list of Living and Dead that way. Perhaps the Hutchins family was entirely different? I believe we have two different men: William Hutchinson and William Hutchins, who arrived on different ships. If you find more info, or think I missed something, please let me know.
