John and Hannah (Hill) Jarvis are the first known of the Jarvis line that are prominent in the history of Calhoun and Roane Counties in WV. John Jarvis of Clarksburg, WV quotes Audrey Jarvis Hinkle as saying, "The first Jarvis of whom I have any information is John Jarvis, who was born in England in 1720. He married Hannah Hill of Hillshire, England and emigrated to America, arriving in Baltimore, MD about 1750. He had two sons, one of them being called Solomon. Legend has it that Solomon and his brother both fought in the Revolutionary War..." The Compendium of American Genealogy lists "John Jarvis 1720-1795" and "Hannah Hill 1725-1800" and states that John fought in the Revolution. One source lists John as possibly a son or step son of Daniel Jarvis, who was born about 1650 in London, England and married a Mrs. Jane Jarvis in that area about 1673. This is not likely, since Daniel would have been about 70 years old when John was born in 1720 and Jane would have been nearly as old. John was born in England in 1720 and died in Baltimore County MD in 1795. He married Hannah Hill in Hillshire, England about 1749. Hannah was born in England about 1730. The family came to North America about 1750 and settled on Bush River Low Hundred near Bel Aire, MD. On this the 26th day of March 1839 personally appeared in open Court before the Magistrate Court of Scott County, Kentucky now ????? Solomon Jarvis a resident of the County of Scott, State of Kentucky aged upwards of eighty years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he was a soldier of the Revolution and made application some years ago while living in Fleming county Kentucky for a pension and refers to his Declaration and the evidence on file for evidence of his services by reason of his great age and loss of memory he is now entirly unable to state his services on the time he made application for a pension but does well know that he was in the Revolution as stated by him in his former Declaration and that he made an application for a pension as stated and of the impression that he proved his services by James Rigdon and Hannah Jarvis among others who had a personal aquaitance with and knowledge of his services who have both since departed this life and he knows of no person by whom he could prove his services at this great length of time nor any person that knew him during his services during the war of the Revolution and he prays that the best evidence that can be produced may be received and a pension granted to him a poor soldier of the Revolution. He herby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension and or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any state. I Lewis Jarvis of the County of Scott and State of Kentucky state that I am a son of the said Soloman Jarvis and believe the Declaration made by him to be the truth. I know he was considered to be a man of Truth repectability and Piety at the time he made his Declaration in Fleming Co. Kentucky in order to obtain a pension and I was informed and believed that he proved his services by James Rigdon and Hannah Jarvis who were know to me by the advantage of several years acquaintance and I believe both sustain the character of persons of respectability, truth and piety. I have heard the said Soloman Jarvis speak of his Revolutionary services from my early recollection up to the present time and I most truly concur in the opinion that he was a soldier of the Revolution as stated by him and that he is now upwards of 80 years of age and in consequence of his great age he has almost entirely lost his mind and memory and is unable at this time to detail any circumstances correctly. He is entirely unable to state the length of time he served in the war of the Revolution or the time he applied for a pension and will have to rely alone upon his former Declaration and the evidence in his case for a pension. I have been informed and believe it to be the fact that the said James Rigdon and Hannah Jarvis both departed this life by whom he proved his services.

SOLOMON JARVIS 1.JOHN JARVIS

Solomon Jarvis, a son of John and Hannah (Hill) Jarvis, was born in Belair, Baltimore County, MD in 1753 and died in Kentucky in 1835. He served the Colonies in the Revolution as a Sargeant in the 3rd MD Independent Worchester Company. He enlisted January 25, 1776 and applied for a veterans pension #171494 at Poplar Plains, KY March 10, 1839. He received a land grant in Harrison County VA (WV) as partial payment for his military service.

Solomon Jarvis married Margaret Haythorn in MD in 1784. A descendant of Solomon Jarvis has written the following: "Solomon Jarvis married Margaret Haythorn and shortly thereafter moved to Harrison County, VA. They had five children: Solomon Jr., John, George, Joseph and Margaret." "I do not know what happened to Solomon Jr., John or George. Margaret married John Fields in 1820 and lived in Clarksburg until about 1833. Sometime after that, they moved to Illinois." "Solomon continued to live in Harrison County after Margaret died in 1810, probably until the children were grown. It was said he lived for a few years near Williamstown Va., then a part of Harrison County. Eventually moving to Kentucky, he lived in Scott County, with some of his children, one named Lewis not in the above list, and dying there in 1835." "Curiously enough, three brothers, sons of Solomon, signed their names Joseph Jr., Solomon Jr. and John Jr."

The Compendium of American Genealogy lists "Solomon Jarvis 1753-1835" and "Margaret Haythorn 1858-1810." However, the Harrison County Court Minutes book for 1809-1810 carries records of a number of court orders of April 17, 1809 "binding out" children of Solomon and Margaret.

These orders suggest that Margaret either died or became unable to care for her family before that date. The orders were:

An order binding 19 years, 6 months old John Jarvis Jr. to Jacob Israel until age 21 to learn the occupation of farmer.

An order binding 15 years, 6 months old James Jarvis to Obediah Davidson to learn farming.

An order binding 17 years, six months old Joseph Jarvis to Thomas Synott to learn farming.

An order binding 13 years, 6 months old Solomon Jarvis Jr. to Jacob Eib to learn blacksmithing.

An order binding 11 year old Mazy Jarvis to Thomas Synott until age 18 to learn housekeeping.

An order binding 8 years, 6 month old Synott Jarvis to Joseph Morris to learn joiner and wheelwright trade.

An order binding 6 years, 6 months old George Jarvis to Peter Finch to learn wheelwright trade.

At least one source states, "...there were older children who were able to care for themselves." Solomon did not appear as a head of household in the 1820 Harrison County census and May have moved to Kentucky before 1820.

Solomon was born about 1753. He is the son of John Jarvis and Hannah Hill. He passed away about 1835. ^[1]
