Biography

Drapeau identifiant les profils du Canada, Nouvelle-France
Catherine Jobin lived
in Canada, Nouvelle-France.

Catherine Jobin was born before 1667, daughter of Charles Jobin and of Madeleine Girard.

She is said to be around 17 when she marries Michel Lemay in 1686.

There is some question as to her date and place of birth, since some sources state when her father and his wife emigrated to New-France, they did so with 4 children, in 1667. Catherine is one of the children named in the group. There is no trace of a baptism for her here. So she possibly did not really know how old she was when she married. nor did her father, who was present, or else the officiating priest never asked and only estimated ages.

On 1681 census, her father and step-mother and 4 siblings are found in the village of St-Bernard, she is not listed with them. Where was she?

Marriage
Contrat de mariage entre Michel Lemay, 26 ans, de Lotbinière, fils de Michel Lemay et de Marie Dutau; et Catherine Jobin, fille de Charles )obin, tailleur d'habits, de Québec (22 avril 1686). Notaire Louis Demeromont Vol XXVI pg 125 #1[1] [2]

Michel Lemay married Catherine Jobin on 22 April 1686 in Champlain.[3]

Known children of the marriage they appear to have been established in Lotbinière throughout their married life. The parish is mostly missing records for the era.

  1. Michel Lemay, b 4 Nov 1689 bapt. 21st in Cap-Santé; married Marie Geneviève Marot 8 Jan 1720 marriage contract notary Dehornay dit Laneuville
  2. Joseph Lemay, b 1691 (21 in 1712); married Marie Angélique Garnier 4 Nov 1713 marriage contract notary Dehornay dit Laneuville
  3. Marie Catherine Lemay, b 1694 (18 in 1712); married Jean Baptiste Gauthier 18 Nov 1714 Ste-Croix de Lotbinière
  4. Louis Lemay, b 1696 (16 in 1712); 35 when he married Isabelle Tifault 26 May 1732 Ste-Geneviève-de-Batiscan
  5. Jean Baptiste Lemay, b 1698 (14 in 1712); married Geneviève Rivard de la Glandery 26 Nov 1731 Batiscan
  6. Marie Agnès Lemay, b 1701 (~ 11 in 1712); married Louis Houde 21 Nov 1729 Ste-Croix de Lotbinière
  7. Antoine Lemay, bapt. 19 Jan 1703 Batiscan; married Angélique Lafontainne (Dubord dite Lafontaine) 14 Feb 1735 Champlain & Marguerite Lampron
  8. François Lemay, born 1708 (4 in 1712); no further data on him, not cited present at any sibling marriage found.[4][5]

Note Jetté lists a daughter, Marguerite, married with François Hamel in 1721. This is an error, there is no such daughter named among the children when tutors are called for in 1712. He cites a marriage contract of 20 May 1721 before notary Dehornay dit Laneuville.[4] The wife of François Hamel, Marguerite Lemay, died in 1773, the record giving her 75 years of age,[5] which would have clearly made her a minor in 1712.

Death
Jetté puts her death before the inventory dated 25 March 1713 done by the notary Jacques Dehornay dit Laneuville[4], but a request from her husband's brothers Joseph and Pierre Lemay to get a tutor and subrogate tutor named for their minor children shows Michel died earlier, as did his wife. The request states that Catherine Jobin died le jour d'hyer 17ième du présent mois de juillet 1712, ie yesterday 17th July 1712, and that Michel was deceased depuis 15 jours 15 days ago, who leave 8 minor children, the eldest aged 23 (majority was 25). It further states that Michel was habitant et capitaine de la coste du dit lieu (Lotbinière) inhabitant and captain of the coast of said place (named earlier in request as Lotbinière).[6] So, since the request (undated itself) states his wife died yesterday the 17th, then the request was done on the 18th, and Michel died 15 days before, ie the 3rd. The request was approved on the 19th of July 1712, and an assembly of family and friends was done on the 19th of July 1712. The children concerned are named as follows: Michel, ~ 23; Joseph, 21; Marie Catherine, 18; Louis, 16; Jean Baptiste, 14; Marie Agnès, ~ 11; Antoine, 9; François, 4. The persons elected to be tutor and subrogate were respectively Ignace Lemay, paternal uncle, and Jacques Jobin, maternal uncle.

Jobin-26 and Jobin-19 appear to represent the same person because: same name, approximate dob, place of birth, name of child in Jobin-26 same as spouses in Jobin-19 and as proof PRDH recognizes this union as well as the dates and places of Catherine's birth and death

Jobin-19 and Jobin-26 do not represent the same person because: I don't believe that there is enough information to prove that these profiles are the same person. I don't think that anything should be assumed; we need some proof.
Jobin-19 and Jobin-26 appear to represent the same person because: Jobin-26 should be merged into Jobin-19, this is obviously the same woman as Jobin-26 does not have a spouse entered but does have a son entered who has same last name as Jobin-19's spouse. DOB in Jobin-19 is more correct, since it is based on the age she gave when she married

Jobin-56 and Jobin-19 appear to represent the same person because: same death date, similar DOB and spouse
