According to "The History of Newton County Georgia", Presley Jones was an outspoken supporter of the Confederacy, who stated that he would shoot the first Yankee to reach Covington. When three members of Garrard's Cavalry came riding into Covington, he fired at the one in the middle. The troopers returned fire and killed him instantly. Another account says that he killed two "Federal Raiders" before he died. This occured on July 22, 1864.
