Biography

Janet (Keith) Erskine is a member of Clan Erskine.
Janet (Keith) Erskine is a member of Clan Keith.

Birth

Janet was the alleged daughter of Edward Keith and his second wife, Christian Menteith, daughter of Sir John Menteith and Ellen of Mar. According to Balfour Paul, however, proof of Janet's parentage is somewhat scant (see research notes).[1] Yet, he continues that the evidence in favor of Janet's parentage included, for example: "...that she and her husband had possession of the lands of Pirchock and Ludquhairn, which had been granted by Sir John Menteith to Christian, his daughter, and Sir Edward Keith."[1]

Marriage

Janet married firstly, Sir David Barclay II of Brechin. Following Sir David's death, she married Sir Thomas Erskine of Erskine before 13 April 1370.[1] Janet's marriages produced the following issue:

  • 1. Margaret Barclay, married Walter Stewart, Earl of Atholl[2][3][4]
  • 2. Joneta Barclay (see research notes)
  • 3. Sir Robert Erskine, who succeeded his father[1]
  • 4. John Erskine, of Dun[1]
  • 5. Elizabeth Erskine, married Duncan Wemyss of Rires[1]

It was through Thomas Erskine's marriage to Janet that their son, Robert Erskine, I Lord Erskine, claimed the Earldom of Mar.[5]

Death

Janet died shortly after Whitsunday 1413;[1] the location of her burial is unknown.

Research Notes

In Northern Notes and Queries or The Scottish Antiquary Janet Barclay is said to have been the daughter of Sir David Barclay and Christian Menteith and not Christian's second husband, Sir Edward Keith.[6][7]

Multiple sources were also reviewed through Genealogy Gophers. No credible sources have been located that indicated that Janet and Sir David Barclay II had a daughter named Joneta Barclay or that their daughter Margaret had any siblings. More in-depth research is needed to determine the existence of this alleged daughter.

Keith-2114 and Keith-205 appear to represent the same person because: The biography of Keith-205 seems to make it clear that the wife of David Barclay and Thomas Erskine was indeed the same person. Although there are issues around the various children attributed to "Janet Keith", if these profiles represent the same person, they should be merged.

If they are not the same person please disconnect Keith-205 from David Barclay and Barclay children.
